The Atlanta Falcons and the New York Jets will face off in the first game of a Friday Night NFL Network doubleheader.
This game is being played on August 10, 2018, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey with the kickoff scheduled to take place at 7:30 PM ET.
Falcons Contract Issues Behind Them
The Atlanta Falcons head into this years preseason hoping for a different result than last year. The Falcons went 0-4 in the preseason last year but still ended up with double-digit wins in the regular season with a 10-6 record.
The Falcons are able to come into the 2018 NFL Season clean of contract talks. The Falcons signed both Matt Ryan and Julio Jones to contract extensions which will now allow both players to relax and focus their attention on getting the Falcons back to the playoffs.
The Running game will once again feature the two-headed monster of Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman. In addition to Freeman and Coleman, the Falcons will have Ito Smith and Justin Crawford competing for time on the field with the 3rd and 4th string.
The Falcons are stacked at Wide Receiver this year. In addition to Jones, the Falcons will have Mohamed Sanu back for another year on the opposite side of Jones, as well as NFL Draft pick Calvin Ridley. Ridley has gained a lot of attention in training camp from his peers for his route running and ability to break free of defenders.
Jets Have QB Positional Battle Going On
Last year, the NY Jets went 2-2 in the preseason and followed that up with a 5-11 regular season record. This year, they sport a young team that is looking to build on the preseason and figures out their positional battles.
One of those positional battles that will take place is the quarterback battle between Josh McCown, Teddy Bridgewater, and Sam Darnold. McCown is the experienced staple on the Jets, while Bridgewater was the potential face of the franchise prior to his injury in Minnesota and Darnold was the NFL Draft pick, which the Jets are hoping will turn into the future face of the franchise.
The running game will be anchored by both Bilal Powell and Isaiah Crowell. Crowell is currently in the lead for the starting spot, however, Powell could overtake him in the preseason. The Jets also signed Thomas Rawls to compete for playing time as well. Rawls was a starting RB in Seattle but injuries seemed to damper his career.
The Jets have really been impressed with Rookie Running Back Trenton Cannon. I would expect Cannon will get the most time on the field on Friday Night among Jets Running Backs. Cannon has made Jets defenders miss him throughout the entire training camp and will now see how his skills measure up against opposing defenses.
One Jet we will not see is Quincy Enunwa. Enunwa is injured and has missed time in training camp. Enunwa will not suit up and will be given the night off. When he is healthy, Enunwa will be a starter in New York.
Jets Win At Home
If you are a trends bettor than you will love this game! First off, the Jets have gone 8-1 ATS in their last 9 home games compared to the Falcons record of 2-6 ATS in their last 9 road games. Additionally, it’s no secret that the Falcons don’t play very well in the preseason, evident by the 0-4 record in the preseason last year. They have gone 4-8 in their last 12 preseason games and have much less to prove that the Jets in this game.
The Jets have plenty of positional battles that will keep them competitive out until the 4th quarter. I think with a potential quarterback playing deep into the 4th quarter, we have to side with the Jets here. Our friends over at Bookmaker have made the line NY Jets -3.5. You will want to buy down that half point and roll with the Jets -3 for 2.5 units!
