The Buffalo Bills (1-0, 0-0 away) travel to Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina to take on the Carolina Panthers (1-0, 0-0 home) in the second preseason game for both teams.
Both teams looked impressive in the opening week. Buffalo played host to Indianapolis and were 24-16 winners. Carolina went into Chicago and came away with a23-13 win.
This is the week where starters get a few extra snaps and they young men trying to make the team are looked a much closer. It is getting closer to teams making some cuts after this week.
This game is being played Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina with the kick off scheduled to take place at 7:00 PM EST
Betonlline has set the line for this game at Carolina -3 and the over/under has been set at 40 points
Buffalo is set at the quarterback and running back positions. Josh Allen is the starter and he saw limited action in the opener. He completed 6 of 11 passes for just 66 yards.
Matt Barkley will back up Allen this season. He got more playing time vs the Colts and looked solid completing 9 of 14 for 126 yards and a TD pass. It appears Tyree Jackson with be the third stringer.
The running game is set with LeSean McCoy & Frank Gore getting most of the carries. Buffalo will be looking to add depth to this position with McCoy’s history of getting hurt. Although Frank Gore is still very productive, he is getting older and it will help to have another set of fresh legs.
The running game looked good with McCoy not playing and Gore having just 2 carries. They ran for 163 yards and two touchdowns. Rookie Christian Wade took off on a 65 yard touchdown on his only carry. Marcus Murphy and Devin Singletary added 15 carries for 60 yards.
The defense played well enough vs the Colts to get a win. The allowed 314 total yards in the game, but 209 of them were through the air without Andrew Luck playing.
Last season Buffalo had the #1 ranked pass defense in the league, but were only 16th vs the run. They did a great job on 3rd down, the Colts only converted on 4 of 16 chances.
Two big things Carolina is looking for this preseason is who will be backup QB Cam Newton, and who will backup RB Christian McCaffrey and add depth to the running back position.
Cam Newton is recovering from shoulder surgery, so expect backups Kyle Allen and rookie Will Grier to get the bulk of the action Friday night. Both looked good last week and this week may determine who has a leg up on the other with week three being the week where starters get the most playing during the preseason.
Carolina looked solid beating the Bears in Chicago 23-13. With Cam Newton setting this one out, both backup quarterbacks looked decent. Will Grier got the start and went 9 of 16 for 177 yards. He threw one TD pass as well as an interception. Grier also scampered 20 yards on one carry.
Kyle Allen replaced him and completed 7 of 11 for 76 yards. Grier probably won the battle last week. Allens numbers were not as impressive, but he did not throw any pics either. Both will see plenty of action this week. RB’s Elijah Holyfield & Reggie Bonnafon are competing for playing time behind Christian McCaffrey.
The two only combined for 49 yards on 13 carries and one touchdown. I am sure they will get more carries this week. The defense played well holding Chicago to only 252 total yards, and they sacked the QB 5 times.
Home field and defense the difference in this one!
QB rotations are usually what wins and losses preseason football games, along with how the coach perceives these exhibition games. Buffalo’s Sean McDermott is only in his 3rd season so it might be a little too early to tell, but he has not had a winning preseason yet going 1-3 in 2017 and 2-2 last season.
Carolina’s Ron Rivera has been doing this since 2011 when he went just 1-3, but has done no worse than 2-2 since then. Buffalo has the better backup QB, but I like the rotation as a whole of Carolina’s better, I think they are deeper in talent. Carolina appears to be the team who wants to win these games more so than the Bills.
I like Carolina’s defense who had 5 sacks last week as well. They appears more ahead of the game than Buffalo at the moment. Throw in the fact they are at home and you cannot tell me even though these games do not count that they still do not want to win in front of the home folks. Take Carolina and lay the 3 points.
