Lions Start Season Under New Head Coach
The Detroit Lions went 2-2 in the preseason last year and went on to post a 9-7 record in the regular season. This year, Matt Patricia takes over the team with high hopes and even bigger expectations. Patricia is the former Defensive Coordinator with Bill Belichick in New England and is expected to carry over the success he had in New England into the Detroit Lions organization.
Matt Stafford is back under center again this year but I wouldn’t expect to see him any more than one drive, maybe two. Stafford will give way to Matt Cassel and Jake Rudock for the remainder of the game. Cassel should take over the second string role while Rudock should close out the game with the 3’s and 4’s.
The most interesting positional battle in Detroit is without a doubt the Running Back position. The Lions have as much, if not more, running back depth as any team in the NFL this year. The Lions signs former New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles Running Back LeGarrette Blount, Theo Riddick, Ameer Abdullah, Dwayne Washington, Zach Zenner, Nick Bellore and NFL Draft pick Kerryon Johnson.
Ideally, the Lions would like to wean Johnson into the overall starting position with Blount and Riddick splitting the backup role. It will be difficult for the Lions is Abdullah can remain healthy as he was expected to be a big thing in Detroit!
Jon Gruden Is Back In Oakland
The Oakland Raiders will kick off the newest era of “Chucky Football” as Jon Gruden will appear in his first football game in 10 years! Gruden is in his second stint with the Raiders, coaching the team from 1998 until 2001 and posting a 38-26 record with the team. Gruden led the Raiders to the playoffs in 200 and 2001.
There is no question who the starting quarterback will be in Oakland. Derek Carr is the man in Oakland and will be leading the way under center. Carr passed for just under 3500 yards last year after tallying 3900 yards in 2016.
Carr should see a few series before turning the reins over to Connor Cook and EJ Manuel. Cook and Manuel will be splitting time over the remainder of the game after Carr departs the game.
The Raiders will have Marshawn Lynch back as the starting running back but we could see a serious running back positional battle take place in the preseason as the Raiders have signed former Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Doug Martin. Martin is not going to just stand by and not compete for the starting position and really has a much stronger running game for Gruden Ball, then what Lynch will bring to the table.
Former Green Bay Packers Wide Receiver Jordy Nelson will fill in the shoes left open by the departure of Michael Crabtree. Crabtree left in free agency and signed with the Baltimore Ravens. Nelson will be paid up with Amari Cooper, who is again expected to have a big season in Oakland.
Raiders Win Gruden’s Return
The boss, Spooky, will probably kill me for this pick but I know he would want me giving out the best advice and that means telling everyone to jump on the Raiders here. I like the potential of the Lions this season but no chance the Raiders lose in Gruden’s return to Oakland.
Granted this is just a preseason game but “Chucky” has an ego to feed and for him, this will mean just another football game that he looks to dominate. If the Raiders lose in Gruden’s return, it appears as all the hype for his return for nothing and the questions of the game passing him by will ensue! Don’t plan on it! Oakland is the play here!
