NFC Divisional Round Betting Preview: Los Angeles Rams vs. Green Bay Packers – Saturday, Jan. 16, 2021

by Ayden Fahlstrom | January 12, 2021 |

The NFC portion of the NFL’s Divisional Playoff round gets underway with the Los Angeles Rams traveling to Green Bay to battle the Packers at Lambeau with the winner earning the right to head to the NFC Championship.

Kickoff on Saturday is set for 4:35pm EST. This is the first meeting between the two teams since October 2018 when the Rams snapped a five-game skid in the series, and the first playoff matchup since 2002 when the St. Louis Rams crushed Green Bay en route to a Super Bowl appearance.

Los Angeles Rams Betting Preview: It’s a Cold Hard World

The Rams advanced to this stage with a mild upset this past Saturday over the Seahawks in Seattle. Rookie running back Cam Akers led the way on the ground and the defense caused fits for Russell Wilson and company throughout the afternoon. After dealing with a thumb injury that was deemed serious enough for him not to start the Wild Card game, Jared Goff entered in relief of John Wolford and will likely start in Green Bay again.

The expected forecast for Green Bay on Saturday will see temperatures go no higher than 30 degrees while the Rams will be practicing in 80-degree temps all week in sunny California. In the two games in which Goff has started with the temperature below freezing, he's gone 34-for-72 for 381 yards with no touchdowns and five interceptions.

Keep an eye on Aaron Donald as well, as the all-world lineman left the Seahawk game with a rib injury in the third quarter and did not return. Sean McVay expects him to play, however, at what capacity remains to be seen.

Green Bay Packers Betting Preview: Byes and Lows

The Packers earned the much-coveted first-round bye after closing the regular season with a record of 13-3, led by the presumptive MVP, Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers is 75-18-1 as a starter in the regular season and 5-2 in the playoffs at Lambeau Field, but one of those losses came the last time the Packers had the No. 1 seed in the NFC.

Green Bay was the defending Super Bowl champion and went 15-1 in the regular season before the Giants pulled off the upset in the 2012 NFC divisional round. Rodgers had three shots in the NFC championship since, but those losses at Seattle (2015), Atlanta (2017) and San Francisco (2020) were on the road. Rodgers' only NFC championship victory against Chicago (2011) also was on the road.

Rams vs. Packers Betting Odds & Lines

MyBookie lists the Packers as 7-point favorites in this playoff matchup, with an over/under of 46. As noted, the Rams won outright as 3-point underdogs in Seattle, while the Packers went 10-6 ATS during the regular season and 5-3 at home.

As home favorites of a touchdown or more, Green Bay was 3-2 to the number this season. This Rams will be the biggest underdogs they’ve been all season this coming weekend.

Two of the youngest coaches in the NFL square off in a very compelling matchup that pits the league’s top scoring offense (GB) against the NFL’s top scoring defense (LA). Davante Adams against Jalen Ramsey is worth the price of admission alone.

The Rams were able to gut out a victory over a familiar opponent last week, but with Goff, Donald and Cooper Kupp all banged up, the home, rested Packers are the play.
