NFL Betting Preview: Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Tennessee Titans – Sunday, Sept. 20, 2020

by Ayden Fahlstrom | September 15, 2020 |

The Jacksonville Jaguars hit the road to take on the Tennessee Titans this weekend in a battle of 1-0 teams. Both teams escaped opening weekend with single possession victories.

The Jaguars defeated the Indianapolis Colts by a score of 27-20 while the Titans defeated the Broncos on Monday Night Football by a count of 16-14. The Titans open as an 11 point favorite in the Sunday early slate.

Titans of the running game

In the first game of the season, the Titans didn’t stray from their philosophy. Pound the defense with Derrick Henry and when they get tired, you pound the ball with Derrick Henry some more.

Tennessee Head Coach Mike Vrabel gave Henry 34 touches in the game (31 carries) and while he didn’t get into the endzone against the Broncos, he did average nearly 4 ypc. The Titans are 7-3 against the Jags in their last 10 games and 6-3-1 ATS

Minshew Mania

The Jaguars may have gotten the win in Week 1 but it would be incorrect to call their win against the Colts impressive. Gardner Minshew had one of the more efficient games possible going 19-20 with three scores but only 173 total yards passing.

As a team, Jacksonville only rushed for 91 yards as well. Against the Titans, the Jags are 0-6 SU in their last six tries in Tennessee and just 1-5 ATS in the last six matchups.

Jaguars vs. Titans Line

Bovada has the game at Tennessee (-11) while 5Dimes has the Titans at (-9). Depending on which side you like, one is more favorable than the other. At +425 for the money line, the Jags are somewhat intriguing given that Tennessee didn’t exactly dominate a Drew Locke led Broncos team on MNF.

The Jags did surrender 363 yards passing to Phillip Rivers though and I would consider the Titans wide receivers to be superior to those of Broncos.

My Pick

The lack of playmakers on the Jacksonville side makes me hesitant to take them straight up. However, -11 is a big number for the Titans to cover when their philosophy is so run heavy. The other thing to consider is that while Gardner Minshew has a 55% completion rate on the road, he is also 3-3 SU in those games and has never thrown an interception on the road.

He also throws for nearly 240 yards per game in those contests. Tennessee is going to win the game but I’ll buy into Minshew mania for a week and take the Jags to cover.
