NFL Betting Preview: Kansas City Chiefs vs. LA Chargers – Sunday, Sept. 26, 2021

by Spooky Express | September 22, 2021 |

The Los Angeles Chargers (1-1) will head to Kansas City to take on the Chiefs (1-1) at Arrowhead Stadium in an exciting AFC West showdown. The Chargers played a tough competitive game against the Cowboys, going toe to toe on offense and defense.

However, costly penalties nullified a pair of touchdowns loomed large as the Chargers lost on a last-second 56-yard field goal to lose 20-17. Kansas City took on the Ravens in week 2 and the Chiefs were in a great position to win the game, but a costly lost fumble with 1 minute left to play ultimately decided the game as the Chiefs lost to the Ravens 36-35.

With both teams losing their week 2 matchup, they are looking to rebound with the start of divisional play. So let’s dive into this matchup between the Chargers and the Chiefs and help you determine the best bets come Sunday.

Los Angeles Chargers Betting Preview: Penalties Cost Chargers

On Sunday afternoon, the Chargers stadium was filled with a sea of blue and gold as they played their first home game in the new SoFi stadium. The Bolts offense didn’t play well on paper, but quarterback Justin Herbert orchestrated several long drives that should have resulted in touchdowns but were called back by penalties.

Herbert finished the game with 338 yards on 31 completions, including a 12-yard touchdown to Mike Williams, but was picked off twice. Moreover, the Charger's lack of discipline proved costly as they couldn’t overcome 12 penalties, 2 of which nullified touchdowns that could have won the game for the chargers.

Additionally, the defense did their job limiting the Cowboys to only 20 points picking off Dak Prescott, stuffing them on 4th down, and forcing Dallas to punt. However, their rushing defense was exploited allowing 198 yards on the ground on 31 carries. The Cowboys strong offensive line opened up holes and the Charger simply missed tackles and Dallas capitalized.

Kansas City Betting Preview: Chiefs Not Letting One Loss Define Them

The Kansas City Chiefs are looking to rebound from a gut-punching loss to the Baltimore Ravens during primetime Sunday night football. Patrick Mahones threw 3 touchdowns in the 36-35 loss, with his receivers doing most of the work after the catch, Mahomes picked up 343 yards through the air. Travis Kelce led Chiefs receivers with 109 yards on 7 catches, one going for a touchdown.

Kansas City’s defense was a one-man show in this game. The defensive line was penetrated throughout the game, allowing 251 yards on the ground with 107 of those yards belonging to Lamar Jackson. However, the Chiefs got a big boost from Tyrann Mathieu who made his 2021 debut.

He had two interceptions in the first quarter, one of which he took to the house for a touchdown. Other than that, the Ravens made adjustments and found a rhythm, and had little problem moving the ball against the Chiefs.

Chiefs fans were stunned with a last-minute miscue, as they seemingly had the game locked up in the 4th quarter with 1:20 left to play in field goal range, down by one point. Clyde Edwards-Helaire fumbled and the Ravens recovered to secure a Chiefs loss. One loss against a solid Baltimore team will not make or break the Chiefs season. That being said, Kansas City will need to be clicking on all cylinders if they want to win this tough divisional game matchup.

The Chiefs are still the team to beat in the AFC, but after a gut-wrenching loss and a defense that got exposed by the running game, I’m interested in how this Chiefs team will respond. The Chargers have an underrated defense led by Derwin James and Joey Bosa that shut down Washington and the Cowboy's offense, not to mention they have a blooming quarterback in Justin Herbert.

The Chargers always play the Chiefs tough and I don’t think that will change even with the game at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs know they need to rebound quickly, and there will be an emphasis on defense to try and shut down a dynamic young offense the Chargers possess. I’m not saying the Chargers can win this game straight up, but I think it will be a hard-fought competitive game.
