Week One of the preseason gets underway this Thursday night for the visiting Chargers and the home team Cardinals. The Chargers went 12-4 last year, won a playoff game vs Baltimore, before losing to the Patriots 41-28, once falling short of reaching their goal, something they always seem to manage time and time again.
The talent is there for sure on both sides of the ball, maybe with New England and Tom Brady being a year older, this will be their year.
The Cardinals had the worst record in the NFL last year at 3-13. Enter Kliff Kingsbury, most recently head coach at Texas Tech, who knows all about offense will be taking his first ever NFL head coaching job.
He seems like a great choice to mentor the overall number one pick QB Kyler Murray out of Oklahoma. It will be interesting so keep an eye on how this rookie coach and QB perform this preseason.
This game is being played at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona with the kick off scheduled to take place at 10:00 PM EST
Betonlline has set the line for this game at Arizona -2 and the over/under has been set at 35½ points
The Chargers already have all the key pieces in place to make a run at the AFC crown this season. I will be shocked if QB Phillip Rivers even takes a snap in this game. He has absolutely nothing to prove and an injury would be nearly fatal to this team.
With a QB rotation of Tyrod Taylor, Cardale Jones, Easton Stick behind him, it is clear that Tyrod Taylor is the backup to start the preseason. He is capable of being a starter in this league, so any extended playing time for him will be a big advantage in the preseason for the chargers. He feels he is underappreciated and undervalued in this league, so he may have a chip on his shoulder and that is always dangerous.
There should be plenty of competition at the RB position with Melvin Gordan requesting a trade. Based on previous years, the Chargers are not really concerned with winning these games. They are looking for depth and staying healthy.
Their biggest worry I would think is getting RB Melvin Gordan back and happy is a priority. I am not sure what the Chargers front office thinks. You will want to keep an eye on this situation closely this month.
After a nightmare season last year, Arizona hired offensive minded coach Kliff Kingsbury from Texas Tech. They went ahead and drafted QB Kyler Murray out of Oklahoma with the first overall pick.
Even though a preseason game, I would think the Cards would want to play well and attempt to get a winning atmosphere back in Arizona. As with any opening preseason game, the QB only makes a brief appearance as do most of the starters.
After a 3-13 season in 2018 I would think if preseason wins are going to be important this year. With a rookie coach and QB we might see more playing time. Murray is going to be the starter and 4 games is not very much time to gel with his offensive players. The QB rotation is weak after Murray. Brett Hundley, Chad Kanoff, Drew Anderson.
The offensive line is supposed to get some extra work so backup Chad Hundley gets snaps with the first team. Do not look for running back David Johnson to play. He is such a key for this team, so I am sure they will do whatever it takes to get him 100% healthy for the regular season opener.
Klingsbury is going to handle his players during the preseason on a “see how it goes” basis. I would imagine only veterans like WR Larry Fitzgerald are the kind of guys who need little work and playing time to get ready, but after a 3-13 season coach Klingsbury will do what he feels is necessary to start winning again. It is a risk bringing in a college coach, but I love the energy he brings to this team. Things should only get better as long as they can stay healthy, something they have struggled to do lately.
Motivation the key, Cardinals/Klingsbury pick up first win!
In my opinion one of the biggest factors in trying to figure out the preseason is motivation. It is not even close as to which team will be more motivated in this one. San Diego already knows what they have and anything less than a trip to the Super Bowl will be considered an unsuccessful season.
This game means absolutely nothing to them in terms of winning. Arizona has a rookie college coach who wants to prove he belongs in the NFL. Even though QB Kyler Murray was the overall number one pick, there were still questions about him by other teams. I can guarantee you he remembers the doubts and things said by others before the draft.
He will put in the hard work and effort to prove he is worthy of that selection. Of course many times preseason games come down to the 4th quarter and who messes up the least is the team who wins the game. I am counting on Arizona to be the more focused team throughout and win this game and cover the small spread at home. Take Arizona -2
