NFL Betting Preview: LA Rams vs. Pittsburgh Steelers – 11/10/2019

by Mark Daloisio | November 8, 2019 |

The LA Rams (5-3, 3-1 away) travel to Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers (4-4, 3-2 home) in an inter-conference matchup on Sunday afternoon.

Two weeks ago the LA Rams were 24-10 winners vs Cincinnati covering as 11½ point favorites, the game was in London. Last week the Steelers won their third straight game with a 26-24 win vs Indianapolis as a small one-point favorite.

These two last met back in 2015 at the Rams and the visiting Steelers were 12-6 winners.

LA Rams Betting Preview

The LA Rams (5-3) are not having a bad season, but they are in the same division as the redhot & undefeated (8-0) San Francisco 49ers.  They are in 3rd place and trail by a full three games.

They are 1½ games behind 2nd place (7-2) Seattle. Even last-place Arizona has been much more competitive this season.  The Rams won as expected last week vs Cincinnati 24-10.

The game was closer than the 24-10 final score indicated.  Cincinnati held the ball longer and had more first downs than the Rams.  The Rams only led 3-0 after one-quarter of play.

After Cincinnati tied it at 3-3 with a short field goal, the Rams just 4 minutes later took a 10-3 lead on Goff’s first TD pass of the game.  The winless Bengals still had some fight left in them and Joe Mixon caught a one-yard TD pass to knot the game back up at 10-10 still in the 2nd quarter.

Jared Goff answered with a 65-yard bomb to Cooper Kupp putting the Rams back in front 17-10 at halftime.  The second half was dominated by both defenses, at least in terms of points allowed. The only scoring was a Todd Gurley TD run 5 minutes into the second half putting the Rams up 24-10 and that score held up.

QB Jared Goff was 17/31 for 372 yards with two touchdowns passes with no interceptions.  Darrell Henderson (49) & Todd Gurley (44) combined for 93 yards with Henderson scoring a touchdown for the Rams who struggled to run the ball vs the Bengals.

WR Cooper Kupp has a huge game catching the ball 7 times for 220 yards with one touchdown. Josh Reynolds added 73 yards on just 3 receptions as well as a touchdown.

The Rams are scoring 26.8 ppg while giving up 21.8 points per game.  That Rams offense is ranked 8th in the league in points scored per game.  Those 21.8 points allowed per game has them ranked 15th in the league this season.

Pittsburgh Betting Preview

Pittsburgh (4-4) have worked their way back into playoff contention in a season where it feels like so much has gone wrong.  They are in 2nd place 2 games back of 1st place (6-2) Baltimore. Forget about Cleveland & Cincinnati.

Pittsburgh won their third straight game last week 26-24 vs the Colts.  Their only loss in the past four games was just a 3-point loss to the first-place Ravens. After this week their next four games are very winnable against Cleveland, Cincinnati & Arizona.  The pieces are in place for Pittsburgh to get back into the race and make a run at the playoffs.

The Steelers got the most out of their 273 total yards in the game and they were aided by three Colts turnovers.  The Colts took the lead four different times in the game but could not hold on to it in the loss.

The first half was close throughout with a 3-3 tie and the end of one and a Colts 16-13 lead at the half.  Pittsburgh took their first lead of the game with 5:25 left in the third on Mason Rudolph’s only TD pass of the game to Vance McDonald of 7 yards.

The Colts added a safety near the end of the third quarter and the lead was just 20-18 heading into the final quarter.  A Pittsburgh field goal at the start of the quarter extended the lead to five points.

The Colts took their 4th and final lead of the game midway through the quarter, but the two-point conversion failed and the lead was just one instead of three. Two minutes later Chris Boswell kicked his 4th field goal of the game regaining the lead for the Steelers 26-24.

The game was not over. It never is when you have Adam Vinatieri as your place-kicker. Known for his game-winning kicks, this time his kick sailed left and the game ended with Pittsburgh hanging on and getting a crucial win.

QB Mason Rudolph was 26/35 for 191 yards with one touchdown and one interception.  With James Conner setting out Trey Edmonds led the rushing attack with 73 yards on 12 carries.

Jaylen Samuels (73) & James Washington (69) combined for 142 yards receiving while Vance McDonald added 30 yards and caught the only TD pass for the Steelers.  JuJu Smith was quite with just 16 yards on 3 catches.

The Steelers are scoring 22 ppg while giving up 21.1 points per game.  That offensive output has them ranked 18th in the NFL in points scored per game.  On the other side of the ball, their defense is ranked 13th in points allowed per game.

You certainly have to give credit to coach Tomlin for keeping his team in contention after losing his two stars and dealing with key injuries.   They have won three in a row, but I am not sure how they are winning some of these games.

Yes, the Colts win was a nice win, but before that, they nearly lost to the Dolphins.  The oddsmakers agree with me making the Rams a favorite even though the Steelers appear to be hot at the moment. I say their good fortune runs out this week and they lose.

Cooper Kupp is playing great and I think he eats up the Steelers secondary.  Gurley due for a good game as well and with Pittsburgh may be keying on stopping the passing game, that should open up some holes for the running game.

I am not crazy about laying more than a field goal and I am hoping it drops come game time. My play is Rams -3½ and it becomes stronger if the line drops.
