2020 Pittsburgh Steelers Season Review

The Steelers started off the 2020 season by winning their first 11 games but finished with a record of just 12-4. Pittsburgh still was able to win the AFC North a season ago, but they limped into the postseason.

Pittsburgh saw its 2020 season end with a defeat to the Cleveland Browns in the Wild Card Round. The Steelers had trouble running the football a season ago, and the defense let the team down in the playoffs.

Steelers 2021 Offseason Additions

Tackle Joe Haeg and offensive lineman Trai Turner have both signed with Pittsburgh this offseason and those moves could pay big dividends. Protecting the quarterback has been a challenge at times, but these moves will help.

Alabama running back Najee Harris was the first-round pick of the Steelers in the 2021 NFL Draft and he is expected to be on the field in Week 1.

Steelers 2021 Offseason Departures

Linebacker Bud Dupree and cornerback Mike Hilton both signed deals elsewhere this offseason and that leaves some big holes on the defense. Both players have been starters in Pittsburgh, and it might take some time to replace that production.

Three Key Factors to a Winning Season

Running the Football

Pittsburgh has to find some more balance on offense in 2021 and it has to start by running the football. The Steelers really struggled in this area a season ago, and that put too much pressure on the passing attack.

“Big Ben” Must Be Healthy

Everything starts with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, and he must be healthy if the Steelers are going to have a successful season. Pittsburgh needs to provide their veteran QB with some help, but Roethlisberger sets the tone for this offense.

Protecting Home Turf

Life in the AFC North is going to be a grind for the Steelers as this is one of the best divisions in football. Pittsburgh is no longer the betting favorite, but it still needs to win those rivalry games at home.

Rating Their Schedule

The 2021 schedule is not kind to the Pittsburgh Steelers, and playing in the AFC North doesn’t help matters. Pittsburgh will have six tough divisional games, and there are plenty of other challenges along the way.

Things start off rough for Pittsburgh as they head to Buffalo to take on the Bills in Week 1. The Steelers also visit the Green Bay Packers in Week in another tough game out of their division.

In Week 16, the Steelers will face the Kansas City Chiefs in another game in which Pittsburgh will be an underdog.

Expectations in 2021

Pittsburgh had an interesting offseason, but it does feel like the team actually got worse with some of the moves. The Steelers will be without a number of starters from a season ago, and some offensive weapons are showing some age.

Pittsburgh could still make the playoffs in 2021, but they aren’t going to be good enough to win the AFC North. Look for the Steelers to go 10-7 in 2021, and that will be right on the bubble when it comes to the playoff chase.

If the Steelers play up to their potential, this is a team that can make a deep playoff run.
