While the Islanders are long out of playoff contention at this point and have been for a while, this game still has a tremendous amount of impact on seeding due to the standings of their opponent, the Washington Capitals.
The Caps are currently one point behind the Pittsburgh Penguins with one game in hand for the third spot in the Metropolitan Division.
Will the Islanders attempt to squash the hope of better seeding for the Capitals, or will Washington come out victorious?
Washington Capitals Betting Preview: Goalie Issues Still Present
With a recent strong stretch of games, the Capitals have pulled themselves within reach of the Penguins, but have yet to overtake their position, being tied and now one point behind.
Captain Alexander Ovechkin missed their last game versus the same New York Islanders due to an upper-body injury and is listed as day-to-day. My guess is that they will rest him til the playoffs after he already secured yet another 50-goal season.
Along with Ovechkin, they have been scoring at an elite rate, tallying five goals a game over their last eight contests.
Their defense has been less of a force over those last eight games, allowing over three goals a game during that time, however over the season they are allowing near 2.95 goals per game.
Ilya Samsonov and Vitek Vanecek are in a heated race to determine who will get the first go at the start of the playoffs, making it hard to determine who will start each night. Samsonov got the last start so expect them to go with Vanecek.
New York Islanders Betting Preview: Hope for Next Season
As a team coached by Barry Trotz, it is not often that you miss the playoffs, so New York’s mind is already on next season and how to prepare.
With a record above .500 in games that ended in regulation and a goal differential of only -8, the season hasn’t been all that bad for the Islanders.
However, a less than productive year for Matthew Barzal (55 points) has left Brock Nelson as the team's leading scorer in a season where not much offense has been produced.
But with Trotz, you can always rely on the defense, and that will likely be the focus heading into next year.
Defensively, the Islanders are top 10 in goals against, only allowing 2.80 goals per game.
Ilya Sorokin has one of the best goals against out of all qualified goaltenders in the NHL at 2.35 allowed per contest, and he is likely going to get the call in net again tonight versus the Caps.
Capitals vs Islanders Betting Odds
At home, the Islanders are slight underdogs with odds of +110 after beating the Capitals on Tuesday night.
The Capitals are listed as -130 favorites on the road at MyBookie.
The over/under total is listed at 6 for this matchup at MyBookie.

While the Islanders brought it to the Caps on Tuesday, that is unlikely to happen two games in a row.
The Capitals depth is still strong without Ovechkin, and their goal scoring has been great as of late.
Look for the better team to get one back tonight with Washington winning in New York.
