The Notre Dame Fighting Irish will take on the North Carolina Tar Heels in a Monday Night ACC matchup on February 12, 2018. This game is being played at the Dean Smith Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and is scheduled to tip off at 7:00 PM ET.
This will be the second time this year that the Tar Heels and Fighting Irish will play each other. In the first game, which took place on January 13, 2018, the Tar Heels squeaked out a close victory on the road by the score 69-68. If you look at the past 10 games, you see that the Tar Heels have dominated the games winning 7 of the last 10 games SU but only 4 of the 10 games were covered ATS.
Bookmaker has made the North Carolina Tar Heels he favorite in the game by 9 points.
Fighting Irish Missing Coston’s Offense
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish recently snapped a 7 game losing streak, winning back to back games against Boston College and Florida State by the scores 96-85 and 84-69. Notre Dame have been playing into some higher scoring games, playing over the posted total in 4 of the past 5 games.
Notre Dame is another one of them teams that have drastically been affected by injuries this year. They lost their star player back in early January as Bonzie Colson went down with a foot injury and has left the Fighting Irish struggling to find ways to get his offense replaced. Colson still leads the team with 21.4 points per game in the 14 games that he played in.
Matt Farrell has taken over as the Fighting Irish’s top scorer, outside of Coston. In Saturday’s game against the Florida State Seminoles, Farrell scored 28 points and dished out 5 assists and 4 rebounds in the Fighting Irish’s win over Florida State.
Tar Heels Need Improved Defense
The defending national champions find themselves in a very unique situation. They entered the season as the favorite to return to the national championship but have played anything like national champs. They are 19-7 on the season and 8-5 in the ACC. The 8-5 conference record places them in 4th place in the ACC.
North Carolina is coming off back to back to back wins over Pittsburgh, Duke and NC State but the Tar Heels lost the three games prior to Clemson, NC State and Virginia Tech. They have been a team that has struggled getting started in games and are routinely playing from behind this year.
One of their main areas of concern has been their defense, which ranks 217th in D1. They are allowing 73.6 points per game to their opponents but in their last three losses they have allowed 80, 95 and 82 points. Coach Roy Williams has expressed his displeasure with his team allowing teams to simply drive to the basket and shoot the ball. If the Tar Heels want to be competitive down the stretch, they are going to need to play much stiffer defense and prevent teams from driving to the basket.
Tar Heels Smack Irish
The Tar Heels have started playing much better basketball over the past game and if they want to be a threat to defense their national title, they must start imposing their will inside the paint. I look for them to take advantage of the mismatches here at home and send the Fighting Irish back to Notre Dame with a double digit loss!
Pick: North Carolina Tar Heels -9 for 3 units
