2017 Punta Cana Poker Classic Sponsored by America's Cardroom
Learn About the 2018 PCPC
No announcement has been made about the 2018 Punta Cana Poker Classic yet… But when it does — we will update you. Be sure to keep an eye on our main PCPC page here for all the updates.
The 2017 Punta Cana Poker Classic, sponsored by Americas Cardroom, is in the books once again. Our team attended this event that was held at the luxurious Melia Caribe Tropical in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
If you were at this event — you will be able to relate to everything this post has to offer. If not, be sure to read, listen and watch as we give you an inside look to what this event is all about.
They will likely do it again in 2018 so we hope to see you and connect with you there next year.
It's always nice to get away and it's always nice to be home — but I think the Spooky Express team could have stayed in the Dominican Republic for the 2017 Punta Cana Poker Classic FOREVER!
Reminder, we put together a 2016 Recap of this event here — and now it's time for the 2017 version. Once again, hundreds of players joined us with their eyes on the big prize!
First, a little background. Marc (the owner here at Spooky Express) has attended this event for 8 years now. He typically brings his wife Harlene, along with a number of friends.
This year, Spooky, Knup, Sarah, Eric & Ellen all made the trip. Unfortunately Harlene was unable to make it but we will be excited for her to join again in 2018. This was the 2nd year the tournament was hosted at the Melia Caribe Tropical Resort and we were curious if they made some improvements from 2016.
The Melia Caribe Tropical Resort
With the monstrous hurricanes hitting the Dominican Republic just weeks before this event, I was curious what kind of damage we would see at the resort. Fortunately, very little damage was done there.
The local areas surrounding it showed signs of damage from the strong winds as we saw many trees down and other structures damaged. But the resort itself was in top notch shape as it was in 2016.
The rooms were first class once again in an area dedicated to “adults only”. We had a room overlooking the swimup bar pool and just a minute to the beach. Again the room was clean and functional — but we didn't spend much time there.
Nightlife & Events
One of the biggest criticisms this event had in 2016 was the lack of entertainment options for the players. ACR listened and increased the number of events this year. They held a kickin opening party in the outdoor lobby area of the resort.
This featured a DJ, music, dancers in costumes and more. The local Dominican Republic staff had a great time teaching everyone “local” dance moves and keeping everyone engaged. The turnout was pretty good for this opening event as many of the poker players were just arriving.
In the middle of the week, ACR and BetCris hosted a tattoo party at the Sportsbook & Casino. Again, music, drinks and games were played. ACR did a wonderful job of “decorating” the venue for this event. And they had a number of varieties of stick on tattoos for the players to enjoy. See our pictures below 🙂
The final night of the event featured the big Halloween Party. This event was bigger than last year as it was hosted in a larger area of the resort. Again, the ACR crew went above and beyond to decorate and prepare entertainment for this event. More people were dressed up and it was fun seeing everyone's Halloween costumers.
You can see Spooky & Knup partaking in dressing up this year on the right.
Spooky, Knup and Eric also snuck away for a day to enjoy a round of golf. We had a fabulous time and props need to be given to Spooky for repeating as the winner at the Cocotal Golf Course. He absolutely CRUSHED it all day long. PS — Knup has since retired from the game of golf and will only serve as a caddy going forward. LOL.
The food was amazing once again at the Melia. They had restaurants dedicated to nearly any type of food you can imagine. French, Dominican, American, Thai, Italian and on and on! They had a couple buffets that were open at most times of the days, and then these sit down restaurants where you could order excellent cooked meals.
They did take some of the feedback from 2016 and made the buffets open for longer periods of time. And also had some more desserts such as ice cream, etc.
The Poker Action
Now to the important part of the weekend. The actual poker! ACR had the same setup for the poker room as last year. They had a buffet style food area setup at all times during the action.
Most people were in attendance for the Main Event. It was a $500,000 GTD tournament that Americas Cardroom had been running qualifiers and giving away packages for, for months. If you didn't win a package, you could buy in to the event for $1500 + $150.
The operations of the main event (and all of the poker room events) seemed flawless. The dealers, the pit crew, the ACR staff — everyone was on point and on their game. Like last year, we talked again to Julio about the 2017 event. Listien below.
Julio & Knup Talk about The PCPC 2017
The main event went on for several days of action leading up to the final day. Only 8 players remained for the final table action on Sunday. Below we have pictured the final table along with the main champion Roberto Carvallo. You can learn more about them on the ACR blog or Facebook page.
On top of the main event, there were cash games and smaller tournaments going on all week long. ACR also continued running their unique “Sit n Go 2.0” tournaments! Players seemed to enjoy those along with the cash game action going on throughout the week in Punta Cana.
Bitcoin Accepted As Payment Form
History was made at this event, as Bitcoin and cryptocurrency were accepted as a form of payment. This was the first time ever at a LIVE poker event. Listen as Tony talks a bit more about this in my interview with him.
