FC Schalke makes a push for European competition when they host FC Augsburg on Saturday. The Royal Blues currently sit two points behind Wolsburg for the final Europa League spot and are hoping for a repeat of their November 2 win over FCA. In that back-and-forth contest, Schalke had the last laugh with goals from Ozan Kabak and Armine Harit in the final 20 minutes to win 3-2.
Augsburg hired a new coach, Heiko Herrlich in early March but the former Leverkusen coach was forced to miss the return of Bundesliga action last weekend after he broke quarantine to buy toothpaste during training. He has tested negative and is expected to make his Augsburg debut in Schalke.
FC Schalke 04 Betting Preview: Shake It Off
Schalke is looking to right the ship after a tough 4-0 loss at Dortmund on Saturday in which the wheels fell off at the half hour mark. The Royal Blues have not won in Bundesliga play since January 17 with four draws and five losses in that span. Even worse, they haven’t scored in seven of those nine contests but their most recent goal was scored by 21-year-old American defender Weston McKennie on March 7 against Hoffenheim.
In league play they are led in scoring by Suat Serdar with seven goals while Harit has six goals plus four assists. Alexander Nubel has started 20 Bundesliga games in goal with 27 goals allowed and six clean sheets though Markus Schubert started Saturday in Dortmund. Schalke is managed by David Wagner who played for the US National Team in the late 1990s and coached in the Premier League at Huddersfield Town the last two seasons.
Augsburg Betting Preview: Bounce Back Time
With assistant coach Tobias Zellner in charge, Augsburg nearly grabbed a crucial point in the relegation battle on Saturday but fell at home to Wolfsburg 2-1 in an added time goal. Tin Jedvaj evened things up for FCA in the 54th minute but the visitors dominated possession and grabbed the last second winner.
Augsburg enter Matchweek 27 with 27 points, tied with FSV Mainz and just four points above the relegation playoff spot. Florian Niderlechner leads the team in both goals (11) and assists (6) while Philipp Max has scored seven times and added five assists from his left-back position. Tomas Koubek has started 23 games in goal for FCA with four clean sheets and a 2.13 GAA though Andreas Luthe got the most recent start.
FC Schalke 04/Augsburg Betting Lines
Bovada has Schalke Even to win, Augsburg +285 to win, Draw at +250 and the O/U is 2.5 goals.
Neither team is playing all that well right now but Augsburg has taken just nine points from 13 road games this season with two wins and three draws. Schalke is better at home (5W, 6D, 2L) and they are entering a nice part of the schedule with games against relegation combatants Dusseldorf and Werder Bremen to follow.
