Bundesliga Betting Preview: Bayer Leverkusen vs. Borussia M’Gladbach – Saturday, May 23, 2020

by Boris Angelov | May 21, 2020 |

Borussia M'Gladbach will take on Bayer Leverkusen at Borussia-Park in the German Bundesliga on Saturday afternoon, 23 May 2020.

This will be their 76th Bundesliga encounter, with Bayer Leverkusen winning 27 against 22 in Gladbach's favor. However, Gladbach have won their last three Bundesliga matches against Leverkusen, including a 2-1 victory at the BayArena earlier this season (2 November), when Oscar Wendt and Marcus Thuram sealed Gladbach's success.

Borussia M'Gladbach Betting Preview

The Foals are currently third in the Bundesliga table, two points behind second-placed Borussia Dortmund and just six off defending champions Bayern Munich 26 matches into the season.

Having the joint second-best (9 wins, 2 draws and 2 defeats) home record in the Bundesliga (alongside Bayern Munich), Gladbach have won just once in their last three home games in the German top-flight. Nevertheless, their home form remains strong enough and we shouldn't forget that Marco Rose's men were one of the sides who managed to defeat reigning champions Bayern Munich earlier in the season.

Finishing fifth in 2018-19, Gladbach have a wonderful opportunity to claim one of the top four spots and Marco Rose's men will be high on confidence, coming off a 3-1 victory at Eintracht Frankfurt last weekend.

Denis Zakaria is one of the most impressive performers in the Bundesliga this season. However, the 23-years-old defensive midfielder remains sidelined as the Switzerland international recovers from a knee injury.

Fabian Johnson is also ruled out through a muscle injury and the experienced United States national team player will miss the upcoming round.

Patrick Herrmann (five goals in 20 Bundesliga games) and captain Lars Stindl (six goals in 17 Bundesliga games) could be in contention to start if Marco Rose opts to rotate his squad, though it looks unlikely after a pleasing performance last time out.

Gladbach's top goalscorer Alassane Plea (9 goals in 23 Bundesliga appearances) opened the score against Eintracht Frankfurt to end his goal drought as he failed to score in four previous appearances, though he assisted in two of them. Plea scored 12 goals in 34 games during his debut campaign in the German top-flight and the 27-years-old Frenchman will be keen to improve this record with eight games left to play.

Bayer Leverkusen Betting Preview

Die Werkself were also convincing on their return to action last time out, recording a 4-1 victory away at a struggling Werder Bremen side on Monday. They are now unbeaten in 11 games across all competitions, winning 10 of them, and remain unbeaten in Germany's top flight since the first day of February when they suffered a 2-1 defeat at Hoffenheim.

Peter Bosz's side can also boast the third best away record in the Bundesliga, winning 8 of their 13 games on the road. They have scored in each of their last six Bundesliga away games, scoring three or more goals in three of them.

All in all, Bayer Leverkusen remain one point behind fourth-placed RB Leipzig and two points behind their current opposition, meaning that a victory at Monchengladbach would move them to third place, at least until RB Leipzig's visit to Mainz 05 on Sunday.

Lars Bender and top scorer Kevin Volland (9 goals in 22 Bundesliga games), who also scored against Gladbach earlier this season, both remain on the treatment table for Peter Bosz's selection.

With Volland out injured, Kai Havertz (8 goals and 5 assists in 23 Bundesliga appearances), who netted a brace from the center-forward spot against Werder Bremen and who continues to be linked with the likes of Barcelona, Liverpool and Manchester United, could feature in that area of the field once again.

Kerem Demirbay scored and assisted to become one of Bayer Leverkusen's top performers against Werder Bremen and will surely keep his starting berth in central midfield, while Karim Bellarabi and Leon Bailey are also options to come into Leverkusen's starting XI on Saturday.

Florian Wirtz, who turned 17 only a few weeks ago, made his Bayer Leverkusen debut on Monday but his starting spot could be challenged by either Leon Bailey or Karim Bellarabi. Anyway, Wirtz already became Bayer Leverkusen's youngest ever Bundesliga debutant at the age of 17 years and 16 days, improving Kai Havertz's record.

Moussa Diaby is another standout performer since the turn of the year as the 20-years-old Frenchman, who assisted twice in the 4-1 win over Werder Bremen, has either scored or assisted in seven of his last eight appearances across all competitions.

Possible Starting Lineups of Borussia M'Gladbach and Bayer Leverkusen

Borussia M'Gladbach: Yann Sommer – Stefan Lainer, Nico Elvedi, Matthias Ginter, Ramy Bensebaini – Florian Neuhaus, Tobias Strobl – Breel Embolo, Jonas Hofmann, Marcus Thuram – Alassane Plea. (4-2-3-1)

Bayer 04 Leverkusen: Edmond Tapsoba, Sven Bender, Daley Sinkgraven – Kerem Demirbay, Charles Aranguiz – Karim Bellarabi, Nadiem Amiri, Moussa Diaby – Kai Havertz. (4-2-3-1)

Spooky Express Betting Prediction

Playing in front of an empty Borussia-Park won't be new to the Foals, who already beat rivals 1. FC Köln in the last Bundesliga game before the coronavirus break.

There are still eight games to be played before the end of the Bundesliga season, but the fact that Peter Bosz's side are just four points off second-placed Borussia Dortmund at this stage should not be underestimated, and the 2002 Champions League finalists will be eyeing their highest finish in Germany's top flight since finishing second in 2010-11.

It's not easy to make a call in what could possibly turn out to be the most entertaining Bundesliga clash of the weekend but we are once again committed to bet on goals when Bayer Leverkusen goes out on the field.

Gladbach, on the other hand, have proved they can score goals as well and we will be extremely surprised if they fail to score on Saturday. They've scored in their last 12 home matches in the Bundesliga, since a goalless draw against Schalke 04 in the opening weekend of the season. Moreover, Marco Rose's men have scored two or more goals in nine of their last 11 Bundesliga games on home soil.

With that said, we expect another thrilling and high scoring Bundesliga encounter so we bet on goals at Borussia-Park.
