UEFA Champions League Betting Preview: Borussia Dortmund vs. Sporting CP – Wednesday, November 24, 2021

by Boris Angelov | November 23, 2021 |

Sporting CP will take on Borussia Dortmund at the Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon on Wednesday, November 24.

Both sides are level on six points going into Wednesday's crucial clash and their Champions League future is at stake.

Borussia Dortmund has won their last 3 matches against Sporting CP in the Champions League, including a 1-0 win at the Signal Iduna Park on 28 September.

Rúben Amorim's side is on a nine-game winning streak across all competitions and they will be keen to hit double figures when they take on Borussia Dortmund in a crucial Group C clash.

Sporting CP is second in the Primeira Liga table, level on points with Porto (both sides are unbeaten) and one above Lisbon rivals Benfica in third. Having won their first domestic championship since 2002, Sporting CP is looking to build on and Rúben Amorim is doing a great job at the capital club.

The Lions had a comfortable Cup game last Thursday as they earned a 2-1 win over second-tier Varzim and Rúben Amorim embraced the opportunity to field some of his fringe players.

Sporting CP suffered a heavy 5-1 home defeat to Ajax in their Champions League opener before a 1-0 loss at Borussia Dortmund on matchday two. However, impressive back-to-back wins over Turkish giants Besiktas (scoring four goals in both) have regained their confidence and are now looking to claim their first win against a German side since they beat Schalke 04 4-2 in the 2014-15 Champions League group stage.

Pedro Gonçalves (known as Pote) missed the first leg in Dortmund but the playmaker is available for the upcoming match and should inspire his teammates.

Furthermore, captain Sebastián Coates returned to training as the experienced Uruguay defender was recovering from a knee injury and his comeback is a huge boost for the Portuguese champions.

If Coates is not fully fit to start, veteran Luis Neto is on standby to replace the Uruguayan at center-back against Borussia Dortmund while Pedro Porro returned from a muscle injury sustained early in Sporting's 4-0 home win over Besiktas.

Elsewhere, Portuguese teenager Tiago Tomás is injured, while left-back Rúben Vinagre and winger Jovane are both doubtful.

Even though he's far from prolific in the League (scoring just once in 11 appearances), Paulinho boasts three goals in four Champions League matches and the 29-year-old forward will lead the line against Borussia Dortmund.

Borussia Dortmund are second in the Bundesliga table, one point behind defending champions Bayern Munich, and are set for a challenging visit to Wolfsburg at the weekend. But first of all, Marco Rose's side will be keen to extend their winning streak over Sporting CP and to secure their spot in the Champions League Round of 16.

Borussia Dortmund returned to winning ways following the back-to-back defeats to Ajax and RB Leipzig prior to the break. Marco Rose's side earned a 2-1 home win over Stuttgart on Saturday and even a draw against Sporting could be an acceptable outcome, particularly if they beat Besiktas in the final round of games.

Erling Haaland's injury is arguably the biggest blow to Dortmund's game plan and the Norwegian goalscorer may not play again until 2020.

We've seen several different formations from Marco Rose throughout the campaign and Haaland's absence could force him to hand Steffen Tigges another Champions League start.

Summer signing Donyell Malen finally ended his goal drought when he opened the scoring against Stuttgart – his first Bundesliga goal and his second goal since he joined Borussia Dortmund from Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven.

Malen opened his scoring account for the Black and Yellows to fire them to a 1-0 victory over Sporting CP. And it proved to be a crucial one for Borussia Dortmund, as it secured a hard-fought victory, so the Netherlands forward will be looking to add to his tally.

Captain Marco Reus scored the late winner against Stuttgart at the weekend. Thus, Reus has scored in each of his last four matches for club and country and should play a pivotal role for Dortmund.

Mats Hummels was sent off in Borussia Dortmund's 3-1 home defeat against Ajax and even though it was a controversial call, the decision was upheld so the experienced German defender is suspended for the trip to Lisbon, with either of Marin Pongracic or versatile Emre Can in line to deputize.

Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel and midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud, who picked up an injury early in Dortmund's win over Sporting in late September, were at least back from injury at the weekend and Raphael Guerreiro's comeback is a further boost for the German side, so. However, Dahoud was only fit to make the matchday squad against Stuttgart and we doubt that he will start in Lisbon.

English teenager Jude Bellingham should start alongside former Benfica man Axel Witsel in the middle of the park, while Julian Brandt could be used in a more advanced role.

Meanwhile, Belgian winger Thorgan Hazard tested positive for covid-19 and won't be available which leaves Marco Rose without another ace.

Moreover, Marcel Schmelzer, Mateu Morey, Giovanni Reyna, and Marius Wolf are also recovering from injuries.

Possible Starting Lineups of Sporting CP and Borussia Dortmund

Sporting CP: Antonio Adán – Gonçalo Inácio, Sebastián Coates, Zouhair Feddal – Pedro Porro, Matheus Nunes, João Palhinha, Matheus Reis – Pedro Gonçalves, Paulinho, Pablo Sarabia. (3-4-3)

Borussia Dortmund: Gregor Kobel – Thomas Meunier, Emre Can, Manuel Akanji, Raphaël Guerreiro – Jude Bellingham, Axel Witsel – Marco Reus, Julian Brandt, Donyell Malen – Steffen Tigges. (4-2-3-1)

Spooky Express Betting Prediction

Despite their poor record against Bundesliga clubs, Sporting CP will be looking to end their five-game losing streak against German sides and they can benefit from the numerous missing players of their opponents.
