Burnley must forget about the disappointing 2-0 loss to Crystal Palace as soon as possible when the Clarets take on Manchester City on Tuesday, 3 December 2019.
The Clarets accomplished back-to-back wins over Watford and West Ham United before losing to Crystal Palace in the weekend, and Sean Dyche's side will have to get ready for a tough challenge when they face a raging Manchester City side.
The defending champions head to Lancashire third in the table, three points behind second Leicester City and 11 points off Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool.
Burnley Betting Preview
Burnley remain in the top half of the Premier League table, 10th, but Sean Dyche's men must be ready to get in the way of the reigning champions when they're seriously wounded and could explode at any moment.
Charlie Taylor has been forced off after only 36 minutes on Saturday and the Englishman could miss the upcoming round. If so, Erik Pieters could deputize at left-back once again. Taylor already suffered an injury in pre-season which led to Pieters starting the season as first choice at left-back.
The 26-year-old left-back came into the squad ahead of the 3-0 win against West Ham United and the Clarets have not conceded a goal while Taylor has been on the field in three of his four league appearances this season. The former Leeds United defender was able to walk off on Saturday, though he must be considered a huge doubt for the upcoming match.
Meanwhile, Matej Vydra recovered from a hip injury but didn't make it to the matchday squad last time out. The Czech Republic forward should be ready to return to the group in midweek, while Danny Drinkwater is now considered fully fit after he made a Premier League matchday squad for the first time since August.
Sean Dyche's side remain without the Iceland winger Johann Berg Gudmundsson (hamstring injury) but the good news is that the Clarets will be happy to welcome back Ashley Westwood, who served a one-game suspension due to yellow card accumulation.
The 34-years-old veteran Phil Bardsley could be exhausted after his weekend duel against Wilfred Zaha, so we won't be surprised if Sean Dyche names Matthew Lowton at right-back here.
Jay Rodriguez (2 goals in 14 appearances) could be an option if Sean Dyche wants to refresh his attacking line. Otherwise Ashley Barnes (6 goals in 13 appearances) and Chris Wood (6 goals in 12 appearances) are set to lead the line for Burnley.
Manchester City Betting Preview
Manchester City have won just one game in their last five matches across all competitions and Pep Guardiola probably experiences his most challenging period at the Manchester City helm. Of course, we won't forget the three consecutive defeats in April 2018, when City lost to Liverpool (two times in the Champions League) and Manchester United, but they came in a moment when The Sky Blues were certain about the Premier League glory.
Pep Guardiola's side remained 11 points behind leaders Liverpool and they'll have to win all their matches while they hope the Reds would make a few wrong steps at the same time, if The Citizens are to defend their Premier League crown for another year.
Despite their undeniable attacking quality, it was the defense that once again cost them the three points as Manchester City failed to beat Newcastle on Saturday.
The long-term absence of Aymeric Laporte turned out into a real nightmare for Pep Guardiola and it also seems that the Manchester City boss lost his faith in Nicolas Otamendi, as he usually prefers to start veteran Fernandinho at center-back instead of the experienced Argentina defender. Otamendi's last league start was in the 2-0 home defeat to Wolves in early-October.
With another ineffective performance, Guardiola might be tempted to refresh his back four in midweek and we won't be surprised if Angelino starts at left-back and Joao Cancelo on the right. It's yet to be seen whether Guardiola is willing to give another opportunity to Nicolas Otamendi but if he does – the Argentine center-back could start over either John Stones or Fernandinho this time.
Rodrigo and Bernardo Silva are two other players who can make it to the starting lineup here, both coming off the bench at Newcastle. The summer arrival Rodrigo can replace Ilkay Gundogan in central midfield, while Bernardo Silva could take his favorite right wing role at the expense of Riyad Mahrez.
Possible Starting Lineups of Burnley and Manchester City
Burnley: Nick Pope – Erik Pieters, Ben Mee, James Tarkowski, Matthew Lowton – Jeff Hendrick, Ashley Westwood, Jack Cork, Dwight McNeil – Chris Wood, Ashley Barnes. (4-4-2)
Manchester City: Ederson – Angelino, Fernandinho, Nicolas Otamendi, Joao Cancelo – David Silva, Rodri, Kevin De Bruyne – Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus, Bernardo Silva. (4-3-3)
Manchester City must regain their mojo as they're set to return to Etihad on Saturday, when Pep Guardiola's side will take on Manchester United in the battle for Manchester.
Although they failed to beat Newcastle on Saturday, The Citizens are firm favorites to earn all three points at Turf Moor, while the Clarets will hope to end a run of three consecutive defeats by Manchester City, failing to score in each of them. Furthermore, Burnley have lost seven of their last eight games against Man City, conceding 23 goals in them.
The distance from Liverpool is increasing week by week and Pep Guardiola's men have some really tricky matches on schedule. City are favorites under pressure, though we would be surprised if they slip one more time, but Burnley can surely benefit of their defensive uncertainty and we're backing Both Teams To Score.
Burnley have scored in five of their last six meetings against Man City at Turf Moor, except in the 1-0 defeat in April this year. They have some really potent strikers and we believe Burnley will score here.
