Eintracht Frankfurt take on Werder Bremen in the DFB-Pokal (German Cup) quarter-finals on Wednesday, 4 March 2020. Both teams had to play in the Bundesliga on Sunday but their match has been cancelled due to the postponement of Eintracht Frankfurt's UEFA Europa League round of 32 second leg against RB Salzburg.
The Eagles remain active on three fronts and while their Bundesliga position doesn't seem to be quite prosperous, Adi Hutter's men will be keen to win the German Cup title for the sixth time and they'll also aim to extend their European campaign as far as possible.
Werder Bremen have lost their last three Bundesliga matches, failing to score in each of them. However, those three defeats have been preceded by a 3-2 home win against Borussia Dortmund in the DFB-Pokal Round of 16, which shows that The Green-Whites will not write off the domestic cup competition despite their relegation struggles.
The most recent DFB-Pokal meeting between the two sides came in the second round of the 1997-98 season, when Eintracht Frankfurt achieved a comfortable 3-0 win.
Eintracht Frankfurt Betting Preview
The Eagles are 12th in the Bundesliga, seven points above the relegation zone and with a game in hand, while they have also progressed to the UEFA Europa League round of 16 where they will take on FC Basel.
Adi Hutter's men had a journey to neighboring Austria where the 2-2 draw against Red Bull Salzburg (after a 4-1 victory in the first leg) was more than an acceptable result to seal their place in the Europa League last-16.
After a remarkable 5-1 home win against Bayern Munich on 2 November, Eintracht Frankfurt have shown a disappointing home form in the final weeks of 2019, losing three of the following four games (0W-1D-3L) at Commerzbank-Arena.
Since the winter break, The Eagles have won four consecutive home matches in all competitions, scoring 14 goals in them, but their winning streak has been ended with a 2-1 home defeat to Union Berlin last Monday. Nevertheless, Eintracht Frankfurt are usually stable on home soil and the back-to-back wins against RB Leipzig (once in the Bundesliga and once in the DFB-Pokal round of 16) are a fine example of their quality.
Andre Silva, who netted a brace at Salzburg on Friday, and his Portuguese compatriot Goncalo Paciencia compete for the center-forward position, while Filip Kostic, who scored twice in the 3-1 win over RB Leipzig last month, and Daichi Kamada, who scored a hat-trick in the 4-1 Europa League win over RB Salzburg, will start on the wings.
Marco Russ, Gelson Fernandes, Lucas Torro and Bas Dost are all injured for Eintracht Frankfurt.
Werder Bremen Betting Preview
Having lost their last five Bundesliga matches, scoring just one goal in the process, The Green-Whites find themselves in the relegation zone and Florian Kohfeldt, whose contract has been extended last summer, realizes that his players need to start earning points in the coming weeks if they are to stand a chance of avoiding relegation.
With that said, Werder Bremen must consolidate their efforts and drastically improve their league performance, otherwise they will lose their Bundesliga status for only the second time since the Bundesliga's foundation in 1963.
Florian Kohfeldt's men have the worst defensive record in the Bundesliga, conceding 53 goals in 23 games, and they sit eight points off safety.
Milot Rashica (10 goals and 3 assists in 22 games) has been Werder Bremen's standout performer this season and the player who shouldn't be concerned about his future as the 23-years-old Kosovar has been followed by major European clubs, including Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool. However, he can use these games to increase his value and Rashica has already scored three goals in three DFB-Pokal games this season, including the third (winning) goal against Borussia Dortmund a month ago.
Davie Selke, who returned to Werder Bremen during the winter transfer window, is yet to score in the Bundesliga but the 25-years-old German forward already opened his account for The River Islanders as he scored in the 3-2 victory against Borussia Dortmund.
Kevin Mohwald, Philipp Bargfrede, Fin Bartels and Niclas Fullkrug are all injured for Werder Bremen.
Possible Starting Lineups of Eintracht Frankfurt and Werder Bremen
Eintracht Frankfurt: Kevin Trapp – Evan N'Dicka, David Abraham, Martin Hinteregger, Almamy Toure – Makoto Hasebe – Filip Kostic, Sebastian Rode, Djibril Sow, Daichi Kamada – Andre Silva. (4-1-4-1)
Werder Bremen: Jiri Pavlenka – Milos Veljkovic, Omer Toprak, Niklas Moisander – Theodor Gebre Selassie, Maximilian Eggestein, Davy Klaassen, Ludwig Augustinsson – Leonardo Bittencourt, Milot Rashica – Davie Selke. (3-4-2-1)
The 2018 DFB-Pokal Champions will have home advantage on their side and to be honest, Eintracht Frankfurt are reasonable favorites to win against a struggling Werder Bremen side, that have to be more worried about their Bundesliga future.
