When Red Bull Leipzig thrashed FSV Mainz 05 8-0 in Matchwek 10 on November 2, the result was the biggest margin of victory in team history. Superstar Timo Werner not only scored a hat-trick in the game but also had a hat-trick of assists while five other RB players added their name to the scoresheet. Red Bull held 67% of the possession and had a shots on goal advantage of 12-2 and a corner kick lead of 14-6.
Obviously a lot has changed since then, most of all that Mainz switched managers a week later and Achim Beierlorzer took over on November 18. Leipzig has battled into the quarterfinals of the Champions League with two shutouts of Tottenham and find themselves in fourth place in the Bundesliga heading into Saturday’s road game.
FSV Mainz Betting Preview: Ride the Momentum
FSV Mainz made a comeback that possibly saved their season on Monday against FC Koln. The 05ers were down 2-0 with 30 minutes to play when Liverpool loanee and substitute Taiwo Awoniyi scored his first goal and 11 minutes later Pierre Kunde tied the game. Mainz held on for a crucial point and they have now secured a win or draw in three straight matches and sit four points above the relegation playoff spot.
On the season Swede Robin Quaison leads the squad in scoring with 12 goals while both Levin Oztunali and Karin Onisiwo have four. Robin Zentner has started 22 games in goal with just three clean sheets and a 1.82 GAA. Mainz has been just a little better at home this season with 14 points in 13 games but have scored more goals on the road, 21-15.
RB Leipzig Betting Preview: Just Like Last Time
Leipzig returned to a surprise 1-1 home draw on Saturday against Freiburg. While Leipzig dominated possession with 66% and outshot Freiburg 22-6, the visitors took a 1-0 lead in the first half in what turned out to be their only shot on goal. Yussuf Poulsen earned Leipzig a point with a goal in the 77th minute but the draw dropped RB into fourth, one point behind Borussia Monchengladbach.
The Red Bulls have gone eight straight without a loss in all competitions and haven’t suffered a league loss since January 25. Werner leads the team in scoring with 27 goals in 37 games, 21 in league action while Marcel Sabitzer has netted 15 goals. Peter Gulacsi has a 1.00 GAA and 11 clean sheets on the season while allowing just two goals during the current eight-game point streak.
FSV Mainz v. RB Leipzig Betting Lines
Bovada has Leipzig -195 to win, Mainz +475 to win, Draw at +360 and the O/U is 3 goals.
All the stats here scream out to pick Leipzig. They have as many road wins as home wins on the season, haven’t lost in league play in seven games, lead the league in tackles won and have scored at least three goals in three of their last seven contests. Mainz meanwhile is fighting for safety and have the fourth worst goal differential in the Bundesliga. It may not be another record-setting 8-0 triumph, but except a Leipzig win.
