2018 Manchester City Betting Preview
Manchester City will kick-off the 2018-19 English Premier League campaign as a reigning champion, convincingly winning the championship race last season. The squad led by a proven winner like Pep Guardiola also broke numerous Premier League records over the course of the past season. This includes some remarkable achievements such as: most points won (100), most wins (32), most consecutive league wins (18), most away wins (16), most goals scored (106), highest goal difference (+79), biggest winning points margin (19) and fewest minutes behind in matches (153 minutes).
Many soccer fans are asking themselves whether Manchester City will successfully retain the Premier League trophy at the “Etihad Stadium”, or the Citizens will succumb to the trend we observe for nearly a decade. No team has managed a successful defense of the Premier League title since their city rivals – Manchester United in 2009. That is the aim of Pep Guardiola, a winner of three successive league titles in both Spain (Barcelona in period 2009-11) and Germany (Bayern Munich in period 2014-16).
Pep will surely not allow City to become complacent. The way he raves and rants on the touchline, demanding more even when his lads are two or three goals up, speaks enough about his perfectionism. That is his winning mentality, and his players buy into it. They know his soccer philosophy and the way he wants to play, making them a well-oiled machine.
Preseason Changes and Summer Transfers
Pep Guardiola will stick to his trademark style and The Sky Blues are going to be very hard to stop. They have improved an already very powerful squad by bringing in a skilled player with enough Premier League experience like Riyad Mahrez, and they also seem to be a happy camp.
Except for the arrival of Riyad Mahrez, whose £60 million transfer from Leicester City is the club's record signing, Man City also signed with three younger players. One of them is the 21-year-old Dutch centre-back Philippe Sandler (from PEC Zwolle), second one is the 18-year-old French defensive midfielder Claudio Gomes (from PSG), and third one is the 19-year-old Australian winger Daniel Arzani (from Melbourne City), who was the youngest player at the 2018 World Cup.
Generally speaking, City is expected to be stronger because their problem area was left-back last season. Benjamin Mendy, who recently became a World Champion with France, is now back and fully fit and can be a real threat down that flank.
Look through the rest of the squad and it is absolutely top quality throughout. Guardiola has at least two excellent players on each position, which makes the competition high and players will always give their best effort.
Meanwhile, the club was left by the veteran-midfielder Yaya Toure who couldn't get enough chances to play considering his advanced soccer age. Another easily recognizable figure that left Man City this summer was the long-serving goalkeeper Joe Hart, who was loaned by different clubs in the last two seasons anyway.
City already started with a trophy and Aguero was a menace
As we saw in the FA Community Shield match when they were missing both David Silva and Kevin de Bruyne when one player steps out another one steps in – and that is their great strength. Just a quick note – Silva and Kevin De Bruyne (twice – 2016 and 2018) were the two players who have been named Manchester City's Player of the Year in the past three seasons. Moreover, David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne were both selected in the 2017-18 PFA Team of the Year, where we could also find three more Man City players – Nicolas Otamendi, Kyle Walker, and Sergio Aguero, while Leroy Sane won the PFA Young Player of the Year award.
The 2-0 victory over Chelsea was a great beginning of the new season for Sergio Aguero in particular. The Argentine forward, who starts his 8th year in Manchester City, bagged twice in that game and hinted about another prolific campaign. Indeed, Aguero has scored at least 28 goals in all competitions in six out of his seven seasons at Man City so far, and at least 20 goals in five out of his seven Premier League seasons. He was once again the top scorer for City (21 goals in 25 games) in their latest title-winning journey and has already become Manchester City's all-time highest goalscorer.
We sincerely believe Kun Aguero will once again play a key role for City, not only because he has a fine opportunity to become one of the Top 10 all-time Premier League goalscorers. Even if Aguero is not in his best form, needs rest, gets injured or Guardiola just wants to refresh the attack, Gabriel Jesus represents a great alternative.
Betting on Manchester City
We believe that pre-season odds on Manchester City to win the Premier League are too short. Of course, the boys of Pep Guardiola are the main favorites and most soccer pundits are backing them but we don't find value in such a bet right now. If you want to place a bet on something that is Manchester City related, well, better place a bet on Sergio Aguero's goal-scoring flair.
The Manchester City number 10 is one of the major favorites to win the Premier League Golden Boot award for the second time in his career. He already did that in 2015 when Aguero scored 26 goals. There are some tempting odds on Aguero's lethal finishing and last time we checked our partners from Bookmaker were offering +900.
Potential Starting Lineup of Manchester City for the 2018-19 Premier League Season: Ederson – Kyle Walker, Nicolas Otamendi, John Stones, Benjamin Mendy – Kevin De Bruyne, Fernandinho, David Silva – Raheem Sterling, Sergio Aguero, Leroy Sane. (4-3-3)
