2018 Manchester United Betting Preview
The most successful Premier League club does not inspire optimism to its supporters on the eve of the new season.
Manchester United already had the players to challenge its City rival last season, but they couldn't do it.
The Red Devils were second and the gap between both Manchester clubs was outstanding – 19 points.
This was Jose Mourinho's second full season at “Old Trafford” after the Portuguese arrived in Manchester two years ago. And if his first Premier League campaign was far from pleasing, finishing sixth, “The Special One” has justified his reputation of a trophy-winning manager by winning the 2016 FA Community Shield, the 2016-17 League Cup and the 2016-17 UEFA Europa League.
Mourinho could not enjoy the same success during his second year when Manchester United suffered a setback in the two domestic cups as well as in the Champions League. The Red Devils were eliminated by a Championship side – losing 2-1 to Bristol City – in the League Cup fifth-round. This has been followed by a disappointing defeat to Spanish Sevilla in the Champions League Round of 16, while United was close to winning a trophy in May, but have lost 1-0 to Chelsea in the FA Cup final.
Preseason Changes and Summer Transfers
Last year, in terms of play, United weren't really great. Their fans were often moaning that they did not attack enough, although they were solid at the back (lol, what a surprise). With the second best defensive record in the League (28 goals conceded against 27 by Man City), Manchester United was expected to strengthen their defensive potential and attacking options as well.
None of that really happened and Mourinho is clearly frustrated by his failure to add that centre-back he wanted so desperately throughout the summer. His desire ranged from Leicester City's Harry Maguire to Barcelona's Yerry Mina (who eventually joined Everton), via experienced internationals like Diego Godin, Toby Alderweireld, and Jerome Boateng.
Manchester United have the resources to make big deals but Mourinho was surprisingly frugal on the transfer market. Thus his squad remains as it was on 4 July when veteran Lee Grant arrived from Stoke City as United's third-choice goalie.
The addition of Brazil international Fred should secure more creativity.in midfield, where Mou has other players like Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard, Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini and the World Cup champion Paul Pogba. Ultimately, Mourinho has at his disposal the same roster that finished above 18 other clubs last season, minus retired Michael Carrick, and plus teenage full-back Diogo Dalot and Fred.
The Red Devils have many world class players in their squad, including one of the best goalkeepers nowadays David de Gea, and others like captain Antonio Valencia, Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku. When we add the rising potential of players like Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof, Scott McTominay, Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, who can surely thrive at “Old Trafford”, the future looks brighter.
What they mostly lack at the moment is harmony, which most of their main opponents have in abundance at the moment. If Jose Mourinho finds a way to get all his key players smiling and happy, they have enough potential to turn into title contenders. Otherwise, a top-four finish might be a pleasing scenario at the end.
Betting on Manchester United
At a time when every other EPL club feels an air of positivity while heading into the new season, there are too many internal issues with existing players, issues over their style of play and fans are consequently not satisfied by the soccer United play under Jose Mourinho's leadership. With a few words – there are dark clouds over “Old Trafford”. If the Portuguese boss can clear away those clouds then United can still have a serious impact this season. If not – we highly doubt that Mourinho will be the Manchester United manager in May, when the season ends.
