For a second week in a row, we present you with our comprehensive preview, analysis and betting insights ahead of Tuesday night’s decisive UEFA Champions League third qualifying round tie between Kairat Almaty and Levski Sofia, including the latest team news, predicted lineups, betting odds and our best bet.

More than 3,000 miles separate Sofia from Turkistan, but Levski are now only 90 minutes away from the Champions League play-off round.

Serginho’s dramatic stoppage-time winner separated the Bulgarian and Kazakh champions at Georgi Asparuhov, giving Julio Velazquez’s men a precious 1-0 advantage (we actually predicted Levski to win To Nill) to protect one week later. Kairat actually impressed with a disciplined defensive performance for almost the entire game, only for a deflected strike in the 92nd minute to finally break their Almaty resistance.

That goal has fundamentally changed the nature of the return leg. Kairat can no longer concentrate exclusively on frustrating their opponents. At some stage, they have to attack, while The Blue Avalanche should finally encounter the spaces in transition that were almost completely denied to them in Sofia.

Interestingly, the sportsbooks still favour the Kazakh side to win the second leg. Kairat Almaty are priced at +125 with EveryGame, while an away victory for Levski is available at +170 and the draw at +220.

The venue provides another unusual subplot. Rather than returning to Almaty, Kairat will host the decisive encounter at the Turkistan Arena. The game kicks off at 20:00 local time, or 18:00 in Bulgaria, which at least prevents both teams from playing during the most extreme period of the intense summer heat. Temperatures are nevertheless expected to remain around 33-34°C at kickoff before gradually falling during the evening.

Levski therefore face an unfamiliar venue, a long journey and demanding conditions. Yet, having survived every challenge thrown at them so far this season, the Bulgarian champions travel far east with their European destiny firmly in their own hands.

H2H: Kairat Almaty vs Levski Sofia

Last Tuesday’s meeting in the Bulgarian capital represented the first competitive encounter between Kairat Almaty and Levski Sofia, and the statistics tell a striking story.

Kairat finished the game without registering a single shot, either on or off target. Rafael Urazbakhtin’s side showed virtually no attacking ambition, instead prioritising defensive organization and attempting to take a goalless draw back to Kazakhstan.

For 91 minutes, the plan worked. The Yellow-Blacks remained compact, denied Levski space around their penalty area and repeatedly forced the Bulgarian champions to circulate possession without creating enough clear-cut opportunities. Considering their approach, a 0-0 draw would have represented an excellent result.

Then summer signing Serginho’s vision changed everything. His deflected stoppage-time strike finally found a way beyond Temirlan Anarbekov and rewarded Levski for their persistence, transforming both the aggregate score and the tactical landscape ahead of the return leg.

Kairat Almaty deserve credit for the defensive resilience they demonstrated in Sofia. However, replicating exactly the same strategy is no longer enough. Even another clean sheet would be meaningless unless the Kazakh champions score themselves.

For the Blues, patience becomes equally important. Velazquez does not need his team to chase the game, but simply sitting on a one-goal advantage for ninety minutes would carry enormous risk. Finding an away goal could force Kairat to score three to progress without extra time and completely reshape the tie.

Kairat Almaty – Current Form and Team News

Kairat have enjoyed the luxury of concentrating entirely on Tuesday’s second leg after their weekend domestic fixture was postponed, giving Urazbakhtin’s players valuable recovery time following their trip to Bulgaria.

That could prove particularly important given the stage of the Kazakhstan Premier League season. Unlike Levski, whose domestic campaign has only recently begun, Kairat are already deep into their title defence and have simultaneously negotiated three demanding Champions League qualifying rounds.

Their European journey began with a 4-1 aggregate victory over Sutjeska Niksic before a far more dramatic encounter with Omonia Nicosia of Cyprus. Kairat eventually survived that challenge via penalties, demonstrating the resilience that has increasingly become part of their European identity last season.

The biggest concern, however, remains in attack. It has now been confirmed that Jorginho’s season is over following the serious injury suffered against domestic rivals Ordabasy. Losing the Portuguese attacker would have been damaging under any circumstances, but his absence becomes particularly significant ahead of a match in which Kairat simply have to find a goal.

The first leg saw Edmilson lead the line, with Marc Gual operating alongside and Oiva Jukkola providing another attacking outlet. Urazbakhtin could retain that structure, although the need to overturn the deficit may eventually force him to introduce additional attacking options.

Finnish midfielder Jaakko Oksanen should again play an important role, while his fellow compatriot Jukkola has become another increasingly influential figure following his excellent start to life in Kazakhstan.

Above everything else, though, Kairat must find a better balance between caution and ambition. Their defensive display in Sofia was impressive, but zero attempts across ninety minutes illustrates just how little threat they carried in the opposite direction. Another passive performance would almost certainly end their Champions League campaign just before the play-offs.

Levski Sofia – Current Form and Team News

Levski could hardly travel to Kazakhstan in better form, although their increasingly lengthy injury list presents Velazquez with his biggest squad-management challenge of the season.

The Blues maintained their perfect Bulgarian First League record on Friday night with a 2-0 home win over Lokomotiv Plovdiv. Angolan winger David Kusso opened the scoring early before rested substitute Reinaldo completed the victory with a last-gasp strike.

Four league games have now produced four victories, while Levski remain unbeaten in all competitions this season, travelling to Turkistan on the back of a nine-match undefeated run.

The bad news concerns the treatment room. Most significantly, Algerian playmaker Akram Bouras has been ruled out for at least a month. The influential midfielder represents an enormous loss, both in terms of Velazquez’s preferred game plan and the rotation possibilities available during this demanding European schedule.

Summer signing El Mehdi El Moubarik should therefore continue in central midfield. Considering the circumstances of the second leg, Velazquez may prioritize stability by retaining the same midfield trio that started in Sofia, with Gašper Trdin accompanying El Moubarik and first-leg hero Serginho.

There is some positive news for Levski on the injury front, with Maicon now fully fit and once again available to Julio Velazquez. The Brazilian left-back has not featured since suffering an injury against Universitatea Craiova, subsequently missing the meetings with Septemvri Sofia, Kairat and Lokomotiv Plovdiv.

Summer signing Alex Centelles has deputised admirably in Maicon’s absence, delivering a series of assured performances on the left side of the backline. Maicon is expected to travel with the squad to Kazakhstan, giving Valázquez another important option ahead of the crucial second leg. However, after several weeks without competitive football, it remains to be seen whether the Brazilian will immediately return to the starting XI or Centelles will retain his place following his impressive recent displays.

That actually leaves Centelles in line for another demanding assignment. Should he start in Turkistan, the Spaniard could be asked to complete his third full match within seven days – hardly ideal given the expected workload and temperatures.

The injury concerns extend beyond Maicon and Bouras. Elsewhere, Oliver Kamdem, Stipe Vulikic, Mustapha Sangare, and Radoslav Kirilov are also recovering from injuries, leaving Velazquez without several potential first-team and rotation options.

There is nevertheless an intriguing positive dilemma at centre-back. Christian Makoun partnered captain Kristian Dimitrov against Lokomotiv Plovdiv and continues to receive regular starts in domestic competition. However, the Venezuelan is still waiting for his first Champions League start of the campaign after an injury disrupted much of his pre-season.

Nikola Serafimov has instead been preferred alongside Dimitrov in Europe, including the first leg against Kairat – he was subbed off at half-time for attacking midfielder Mazire Soula. Whether Velazquez maintains that partnership or decides Makoun is finally ready for a Champions League start remains one of the biggest selection questions ahead of Tuesday night.

Whatever combination he chooses, Levski’s tactical objective should be considerably different from last week. At first glance, the statistics make backing goals difficult. Only two of Kairat’s last 12 home matches in European competition have seen both teams score, while just three of Levski’s previous 11 Champions League games have produced goals at both ends. Add Kairat’s zero-shot performance in Sofia and another low-scoring encounter might appear the obvious conclusion.

Yet this is precisely where the aggregate score matters more than the historical numbers. Kairat were able to approach the first leg with almost total defensive caution because 0-0 suited them perfectly. They cannot do that indefinitely on Tuesday. Trailing 1-0, the Kazakh champions eventually have to commit players forward and expose themselves to considerably greater risk.

That should benefit Levski. The Bulgarian champions may actually find this matchup more comfortable from an attacking perspective than the home leg. Velazquez’s side possess genuine pace in transition, and Kairat pushing additional players forward should provide Oko-Flex, Everton Bala and company with spaces that simply did not exist in Sofia.

At the opposite end, expecting Levski to cruise through the entire evening without coming under pressure would be dangerous. The Blues conceded on each of their previous two European qualifying trips, drawing 2-2 at Universitatea Craiova and 1-1 at Borac Banja Luka. Now they face a rested Kairat side in difficult conditions, with the hosts knowing their Champions League campaign depends on finally producing something offensively.

The first Kairat goal, should it arrive, would also change everything. Suddenly the aggregate score would be level, the atmosphere would intensify and Levski would have to become more adventurous themselves.

So while the recent statistical trends point strongly towards a low-scoring affair, the tactical circumstances tell a different story. Kairat Almaty need to score, while Levski should finally receive opportunities to counterattack and both teams possess enough individual quality to punish the additional spaces that are likely to emerge.
