The UEFA Champions League dream is very much alive in Nijmegen, near the Dutch-German border, where NEC welcome Bodø/Glimt to the Goffertstadion on Wednesday night for the opening leg of their play-off showdown.

Remarkably, simply reaching this stage represents unexplored territory for NEC Nijmegen. This is their first Champions League qualifying campaign and only their fourth appearance in UEFA competition this century, yet Dick Schreuder’s side now find themselves just two matches away from the league phase. Wednesday’s first leg in Nijmegen will be followed by the return in Bodø next Tuesday (August 25).

Standing in their way is a Bodø/Glimt team for whom memorable European nights have become increasingly familiar over the past couple of years. The Norwegians reached the Champions League round of 16 last season after recording remarkable victories over Manchester City, Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan, and they now return to the play-offs hoping to extend what’s arguably the greatest period in the club’s history.

Rather than suffering a European hangover, NEC followed that exhausting evening with an emphatic 4-1 Eredivisie victory away to Willem II. Adam Tahaui marked his debut with a goal, while Tjaronn Chery, Bryan Linssen and Sierhuis also found the net.

There is plenty of experience in this otherwise relatively inexperienced European squad. Veteran creators Dusan Tadić and the 38-year-old Chery provide the intelligence behind the attack, while Linssen offers another proven option up front.

The injury situation is considerably less encouraging. Perr Schuurs, Yassin Moslih, Sami Ouaissa, Philippe Sandler and Yassin Moslih are all ruled out, while Japanese forward Koki Ogawa remains doubtful. Ouaissa and Sandler both suffered problems during the Olympiacos tie, further reducing Schreuder’s options ahead of another physically demanding European encounter.

NEC’s recent matches have nevertheless been difficult to ignore from a betting perspective. Nine of their last ten competitive games (including last season) have seen both teams score, while six of their last seven goals arrived after half-time. Their ability to remain dangerous deep into matches was also evident again against Olympiacos.

A six-goal first leg (3-3 draw) against Union Saint-Gilloise of Belgium left their matchup finely balanced before another five goals followed at Aspmyra Stadion. With the aggregate score locked at 5-5 in extra time, Andreas Helmersen struck in the 117th minute to complete a remarkable 6-5 aggregate victory for the Norwegian side.

That result extended an outstanding run for Knutsen’s side. Bodø/Glimt arrive in the Netherlands unbeaten in 13 matches across all competitions, while their European numbers are particularly impressive: they have consistently found the net multiple times and continue to carry the aggressive attacking identity that has produced so many memorable continental performances.

Last season established just how high their ceiling can be. Glimt defeated Manchester City 3-1 and won 2-1 away to Atletico Madrid late in the league phase before eliminating Serie A winners Inter Milan in the knockout play-offs to reach the Champions League round of 16 (where they lost 5-3 on aggregate to Sporting CP, despite winning the first leg 3-0 on home soil).

There is also a useful preparation advantage ahead of Wednesday’s first leg. Bodø/Glimt travelled to the Netherlands several days early for a training camp, allowing the squad to acclimatise to natural grass and warmer conditions while enjoying a full week without competitive action.

However, Knutsen is missing several players. The club reports that Isak Sjong, Jostein Gundersen, Håkon Evjen, and August Mikkelsen, Isak Sjong and Jostein Gundersen remained in Norway to continue individual rehabilitation rather than joining the travelling squad. That latest update means Gundersen should also be regarded as unavailable despite previously being listed as questionable.
