Rangers – Can the Ibrox Fortress Deliver a First-Leg Advantage?
Rangers will be banking on home advantage at Ibrox to secure a crucial first-leg lead. The Scottish Premiership runners-up last season finished a full 17 points behind champions Celtic, and now face the long path through Champions League qualifying rounds once again. Under new boss Russell Martin, the Gers have had a relatively quiet preseason, playing just one friendly so far – a 2-2 draw against Club Brugge – with another scheduled against Middlesbrough between the two legs of this European tie.
As the squad continues to gel, Rangers have been active in the transfer market, securing eight summer signings, among them Nasser Djiga, who arrived on loan from Wolves, and Colombian winger Oscar Cortes from Ligue 1 side Lens. Djiga is expected to start at the heart of defense alongside John Souttar, while the midfield could see Kieran Dowell, who impressed on loan at Birmingham, pulling the strings behind striker Danilo.
One notable storyline involves Cyriel Dessers, who is reportedly on the verge of a transfer to Greek side AEK Athens.
