PGA Odds and Picks for the 2017 Genesis Open in Golf
Earl takes a look at the 2017 Genesis Open in PGA Tour golf. This event starts on Thursday and runs through Sunday. Let's get a betting win this week!
Last week was a tough week to handicap because of the weather issues that plagued the AT&T Pebble Beach. Thursday was pretty rough as it rained and gusted wind throughout the day. That being said, can’t complain about the weather because everyone else was up against the same elements.
The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro/Am is in the past and I must say, as much as I enjoy watching golf, watching this past week was rough on the eyes. If I had to watch Justin Timberlake do one more stupid dance move, Bill Murray in those stupid overalls or Larry The Cable Guy in his cut off sleeves on the golf course one more day, I may have started gouging out my eyeballs!
2017 Genesis Open
This week, we shift gears, put our heads in the books and handicap The Genesis Open. This tournament is from Palisades, California and was formerly known as the Northern Trust Open. The tournament is stacked with the who’s who in pro golf. This week we get back to the normal cut of 70 plus ties.
The Genesis Open will consist of 8 of the Top 10 in the Official World Rankings, 19 of the Top 30 in Official World Rankings, 28 of the Top 50 in the Official World Rankings, 10 US Ryder Cup Members, 8 past tournament champions and the #1 golfer in the world! This tournament is stacked with talent and if you were to look at just the field, you would think this was a major!
Riviera Country Club One Of Toughest Courses on PGA Tour
Riviera Country Club is routinely one of the hardest courses on tour each and every year. The fairways at Riviera CC can be tough at times to hit due to the trees lined along the fairway and since this tournament has been played here since 1973, those trees have had plenty of time to mature. Make sure you look for golfers that are decent hitting out of the rough this week as this course always plays long!
Weather Forecasters Calling For Soggy Conditions
Weather.com has the forecast for this week looking bleak to say the least. Thursday looks like the best day of the 4 golf days. Thursday calls for partly cloudy skies with temps in the upper 60’s. Friday is looking absolutely terrible for golf. They are forecasting rain all day, 22 mph winds and temps in the 50’s. Saturday and Sunday they are calling for more rain but less winds, only peaking at about 8 mph. Make sure you look for those golfers with decent driving distance this week as it could be extremely important in these conditions.
This week, due to the weather and the course in general, we will put the most weight on Driving Distance. With the course being wet and the forecast calling for weather, you need someone that is long off the tee. The second thing we looked at is Par 4 scoring. We also added in Strokes Gained: Tee To Green, Strokes Gained: Approach and Greens In Reg.
Our Golfers This Week
We have a PGA 6 pack of golfers this week! These 6 plays are in no particular order. We will play 1 unit on each play.
Dustin Johnson 9/1- Dustin Johnson is by far one the best course horses at Riviera CC. I hate his odds but I really like his chances to win this year at Riviera CC. He has a pair of 2nd place finishes, 3rd place, a pair of 4th place finishes, 10th and 2 missed cuts. In 3 tournaments this year, he has a 3rd, 6th and a missed cut.
Sergio Garcia 25/1- Sergio is currently a great value at 25/1! He is coming in off a win at Omega Dubai Desert Classic and has great history here at Riviera CC. He has a pair of 4th place finishes, a 6th and a 13th place finish at Riviera CC. This is his first trip to the US in 2017 and I look for him to be playing late on Sunday with a shot at the win.
Justin Thomas 25/1- My absolute top play this week is Justin Thomas. Thomas sets up perfect for this course and has sort of gotten overlooked since he missed the cut at Waste Management Classic. Thomas is 1st in Strokes Gained: Tee To Green, 1st in Par 4 Scoring, 6th in Strokes Gained:Approach, 11th in Driving Distance, 15th Greens In Reg and 25th in Ball Striking.
Brendan Steele 66/1- Brendan Steele at 66 to 1 is a great play! He is a course monster at Riviera CC. He has made the cut 5 years in a row. In 2017, he has a pair of 6th place finishes, 16th and 20th place finish. He is Top 35 in every single category that we tracked this week including 5th in Ball Striking, 7th Strokes Gained: Approach, 9th in Par 4 Scoring, 11th Strokes Gained: Tee To Green, 13th Greens In Reg, 35th in Driving Distance. Had there not been any weather in the forecast, he would be my absolute top play but I still like him even in the bad weather.
Kyle Stanley 200/1- If you like Steele at 66 to 1, your gonna love my next two plays. Kyle Stanley is on top of his game right now. He has a 14th place finish and 2 36th place finishes in 2017. He also ranks Top 36 in every single category that we tracked….yet for some reason, this guy is 200-1! No way possible this guy should be 200/1.
K.J. Choi 200/1- K.J. Choi has some of the best course history here. He has made the cut every single year that he has played since 2001 with many top finishes of that time span! Yes, you read that correct…. Every cut since 2001! Last year, he finished 5th and I look for him to continue his success at this course. That being said, his current form isn’t all that great so we will get some decent odds on him.
