2021 US Open Betting Preview: Daniil Medvedev vs Novak Djokovic – Sunday, Sept. 12, 2021

by Boris Angelov | September 11, 2021 |

In an anticipated clash between two Eastern Europeans, Serbia's Novak Djokovic will take on Russia's Daniil Medvedev in the 2021 US Open Final on Sunday.

Both top-ranked players were tipped to reach the final and they met the expectations.

The Russian will once again challenge the World No. 1 in a Major final this season as the Serb was absolutely ruthless to outclass Medvedev 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 in the Australian Open showdown earlier this year.

All in all, Medvedev is one of the few who boast a relatively good record against the Serb as the Russian has won three of their eight head-to-head meetings, with all of his wins coming in their last five matches.

Daniil Medvedev Betting Preview

The 25-year-old Russian enjoyed a relatively comfortable (considering the advanced stage of the competition) semi-final tie with Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime. Medvedev spent slightly more than two hours on the court on Friday (hours before Djokovic’s thrilling five-setter with Zverev) and was mostly challenged during the second set, when the Canadian failed to convert two set-points.

Thus, Daniil Medvedev reached his second US Open final (also third Major final) as he was involved in a spectacular five-setter with Rafael Nadal two years ago and the Russian will have to show the same fighting mentality and resilience (he was two sets down) if he is to stand a chance against Djokovic.

Medvedev's journey from the first round through to the US Open final has been quite smooth as the Russian only lost one set so far and that happened against Botic Van De Zandschulp of the Netherlands in the quarter-finals.

We should bear in mind, however, that the Russian was also flawless twelve months ago when he never dropped a set until his disappointing semi-final defeat to eventual champion Dominic Thiem.

The Serb ended Sascha Zverev's 16-match winning streak to reach his 31st Grand Slam final (20W-10L) and will be eager to etch his name into history books as the G.O.A.T. He spent more than three and a half hours at the Arthur Ashe Stadium to beat the in-form German in five sets on Friday and it was a morale-boosting triumph.

The Djoker has been far from glamorous earlier in the competition but the truth is that he's on to his ninth final at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York. The manner of his victories en route to the semi-final was not so convincing as Djokovic lost a set against almost all of his opponents (losing the opening set most of the time) but once he gained momentum, he became an unplayable opposition for virtually everyone, regardless of his own ability.

Now knocking on the door of tennis immortality, Novak Djokovic has one last step to take to become the first man since legendary Australian Rod Laver in 1969 to complete a Calendar-Year Grand Slam – as well as major title No.21, an all-time men’s record.

Spooky Express Betting Prediction

Novak Djokovic is a -257 Money Line favorite to clinch another glorious victory and to prevail against Medvedev, whose odds of winning are at +217 with BetOnline.

In either case, it would be a history-making US Open final. Novak Djokovic has the opportunity to surpass his tennis rivals Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, and as mentioned above, to complete the valuable Grand Slam. Medvedev, on the other hand, could win his first Grand Slam title and also become the first Russian man to win a Major tournament since Marat Safin's Australian Open triumph in 2005.

We already backed Daniil Medvedev to win his maiden Grand Slam title and we can all agree that betting against Djokovic is a risky bet, indeed. The Russian will need something more than “just” a perfect performance to overcome Djokovic in a best-of-five series and he is perfectly aware of that.

Remarkably, unlike his impeccable Australian Open final record, Djokovic has lost five of his eight US Open final appearances (including defeats to Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka in addition to perhaps justified defeats from Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer earlier in his career) and unlike Melbourne Park, Flushing Meadows is a place where Medvedev might have a better chance to outlast Djokovic.
