2021 US Open Tennis Betting Preview – Frances Tiafoe vs Felix Auger-Aliassime – Sunday, Sept. 05, 2021

by Boris Angelov | September 4, 2021 |

Frances Tiafoe of the United States will face Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime in the fourth round of the 2021 US Open on Sunday, September 5.

This will be their first-ever head-to-head encounter as both players are heading into the match on the back of some morale-boosting five-setter wins in the third round.

But on the other hand, one is certain – the winner of this tie will reach his maiden US Open quarter-final and will also have a very decent opportunity to go further. Indeed, the winner will advance to face either German qualifier Peter Gojowczyk or Spain's teenage sensation Carlos Alcaraz, who recently stunned No. 3 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in another thrilling five-setter on Wednesday.

Frances Tiafoe Betting Preview

The 23-year-old American produced one of his best performances to defeat the No. 5 seed Andrey Rublev of Russia last night to reach the US Open fourth round for the second year in a row.

Frances Tiafoe played his most aggressive tennis when it mattered the most as he hit 14 winners to Rublev's four in the final set.

Tiafoe's performance was incredibly solid in the fifth set as he was lifted up by the home crowd at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, though the match finished t 2:14 a.m – making it tied for the fifth latest finish in the US Open Championships history. Remarkably, Tiafoe's coach – Wayne Ferreira – lost to Younes El Aynaoui in the fourth round in 2002 and their four-setter also finished at 2:14 A.M.

As mentioned above, Tiafoe already reached the US Open fourth round last season when he defeated Italian veteran Andreas Seppi, John Millman of Australia and Marton Fucsovics of Hungary en route to his round fourth-round clash with Daniil Medvedev, where the Russian was ruthless to clinch a 6-4, 6-1, 6-0 win.

Prior to this tie, Tiafoe's record in five-setters was 2-10 but his determination was what really made the difference and as he admitted: “I wasn't going to leave this court without a win tonight.”

Earlier in the season, the American enjoyed one of his greatest career wins as he beat world No.4 Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round of the Wimbledon Championship – his first victory over a Top-5 player.

Furthermore, Tiafoe earned another prestigious victory earlier in the North American hardcourt swing when he beat top-ranked Canadian Denis Shapovalov in the second round of the Toronto Masters in his build up to the US Open.

Tiafoe also prevailed against the former No. 1 and 2012 US Open champion Andy Murray in the second round of the Winston-Salem Open, where he suffered a 7-6, 2-6, 3-6 defeat to eventual runner-up Mikael Ymer of Sweden in the quarter-finals.

With that said, Frances Tiafoe has won five of his last six matches on hardcourts and will be looking to extend his good form on Sunday.

Felix Auger-Aliassime Betting Preview

The Canadian survived a five set thriller that lasted nearly four hours to beat No. 18 seed Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain on Wednesday. He took two sets to love lead but Bautista-Agut won the subsequent two sets to take the match into a fifth set.

Felix Auger-Aliassime remained composed and reignited his winning touch in the crucial fifth set against experienced Spaniard Roberto Bautista-Agut. Thus, likewise his opponent, the 21-year-old Canadian reached the US Open fourth round for the second consecutive year in a row. He was stopped by eventual champion Dominic Thiem twelve months ago.

After his early first-round exit at the Tokyo Olympics, Auger Aliassime started his North American hardcourt swing one month ago in Washington. First, he claimed a comeback win over Italian veteran Andreas Seppi, but he then suffered another disappointing defeat – this time to American wild card Jenson Brooksby in the round of 16.

The Canadian's North American journey continued on home soil – at the Canadian Open (also known as the Toronto Masters) – but Serbia's Dusan Lajovic stopped him in the second round only a couple of days after his 21st birthday.

His build-up to the US Open Championship continued at the Cincinnati Masters, where Felix Auger Aliassime finally reignited his good form as he earned three straight victories over Marton Fucsovics of Hungary, Karen Khachanov of Russia, and the World No. 8 Matteo Berrettini of Italy – his sixth win over a Top 10 opponent and the first one on hard-courts since he defeated Greece's Stefanos Tsitsipas at the 2019 Indian Wells Masters.

However, Auger Aliassime's winning sequence was ended by Tsitsipas himself in the quarter-finals in what turned out to be the Greek's third victory over the Canadian this season.

Even though he's seeded 12th at the US Open, Felix Auger-Aliassime's path to the fourth round has been far from smooth, and he had to survive a really challenging first-round tie with Evgeny Donskoy as the Canadian won three tie-breaks to eventually claim a 7-6, 3-6, 7-6, 7-6 win over the Russian qualifier.

His next enemy was the Lucky Loser Bernabé Zapata Miralles of Spain (ranked 684th), who defeated countryman Feliciano López in the first round. When it was anticipated that Felix would likely have a comfortable outing against the Spaniard, Zapata Miralles pushed the first set into a tie-break in another challenge of Auger-Aliassime's mentality.

Felix Auger-Aliassime survived the tie-break and then wrapped up two more quick sets to seal a 7-6, 6-3, 6-2 win and book himself a third-round clash with Roberto Bautista Agut.

Spooky Express Betting Prediction

Tiafoe already has one Grand Slam quarter-final appearance under his belt as he was stopped by Rafa Nadal at the 2019 Australian Open.

Likewise, Felix Auger-Aliassime also boasts one Grand Slam quarter-final to his name and this happened just two months ago – when the Canadian lost in four-sets to Italy's Matteo Berrettini at the Wimbledon Championship.

Felix Auger-Aliassime is a -182 MoneyLine favorite to beat Frances Tiafoe, whose odds of winning are at +162 with BetOnline.

We were really impressed by the manner of Tiafoe's victory against Andrey Rublev and we're backing the American to cause another upset at the weekend.
