2021 US Open Tennis Betting Preview – Jannik Sinner vs Gael Monfils – Saturday, Sept. 04, 2021

by Boris Angelov | September 3, 2021 |

A couple of days after his 35th birthday, No. 17 seed Gael Monfils of France will challenge 13th seed Jannik Sinner in the third round of the 2021 US Open.

Both players have won once in their previous two head-to-head meetings over the course of the 2019 season as Jannik Sinner defeated Gael Monfils 6-3, 6-2 in Antwerp, while Le Monf took his revenge with a 6-3, 7-6 victory in Vienna – both matches took place in October 2019.

The winner of this tie will advance to face either American wildcard Jack Sock or last year's finalist and 4th-seed Alexander Zverev of Germany in the fourth round.

Gael Monfils Betting Preview

La Monf will be high on confidence and enthusiastic enough as the 35-year-old veteran married WTA tennis player Elina Svitolina earlier this summer.

Gael Monfils reached the US Open semi-finals five years ago – in 2016 – when he didn't drop a set until the semi-final tie against Novak Djokovic, where the Serb defeated Monfils 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.

Monfils attended the Tokyo Olympics following his marriage in mid-July, where he lost 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 to Ilya Ivashka of Belarus, but given the circumstances, his performance could be justified.

His last appearance at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City was in 2019 when Monfils lost a thrilling five-setter to Italy's Matteo Berrettini in the quarter-finals.

Gael Monfils started his US Open campaign with a comfortable 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Federico Coria of Argentina, but he had to deal with a trickier challenge in the next round. Still, Le Monf produced a dominating performance to beat experienced American Steve Johnson 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, and book his place into the third round.

Jannik Sinner Betting Preview

The Italian won his third career title and first ATP 500 title at the 2021 Citi Open in Washington last month as he defeated several young players such as Emil Ruusuvuori, Sebastian Korda, and Jenson Brooksby in straight sets en route to the final, while Sinner claimed a 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 win over Mackenzie McDonald in the final.

His build-up to the US Open continued at the Masters 1000 tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati. Still, Jannik Sinner failed to impress in either of them, winning just one match (against Federico Delbonis) and losing two – to James Duckworth and John Isner.

Jannik Sinner already bettered his best-ever US Open performance by reaching the third round, but the 20-year-old Italian talent won't be willing to stop here.

His US Open campaign started with victories over Australian Max Purcell in the first round (the same Aussie who stunned world No. 15 Félix Auger-Aliassime at the Tokyo Olympics) and against American teenager Zachary Svajda (ranked 716th).

However, we must remember that Sinner's performance against Svajda was far from a stroll in the park as the Italian played two tie breaks to seal his 6-3, 7-6, 6-7, 6-4 victory.
