One month after their duel in Montreal, Daniil Medvedev and Rafael Nadal are set to meet on a bigger stage when the pair go head-to-head in the 2019 US Open Men's Final at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens, New York City.
Whereas Rafael Nadal defeated Italian Matteo Berrettini in straight sets (7-6, 6-4, 6-1) to reach fifth US Open final, Daniil Medvedev comes off a 3-0 victory over Federer's executioner, Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria, and will hope to beat the odds against the firmly favored Spaniard.
Although he's an underdog here, Medvedev has the most wins on ATP tour this season with 50, and will face the man second in that table with 46 – Rafael Nadal – for the second time in their career, less than a month since their previous match in Montreal.
After a few impressive wins at Rogers Cup, the Russian eventually lost the Montreal Masters final to Rafael Nadal in disappointing fashion (6-3, 6-0), but Medvedev is 20-2 during his North American hard-court swing.
Nadal, on the other hand, played less matches but is yet to lose since arriving to North America. He first won five consecutive matches to retain the title in Montreal and then travelled to New York City, where the Spaniard already scored six wins in a row and the seventh (12th overall) can earn him his 19th Grand Slam title.
Daniil Medvedev Betting Preview
Daniil Medvedev became only the second Russian (after Marat Safin who triumphed against Pete Sampras in 2000) to reach the US Open men's singles final. He is also the first Russian male player to reach a Grand Slam final since Safin's remarkable victory over Lleyton Hewitt in the 2005 Australian Open.
The 23-years-old Russian achieved twelve consecutive wins on hard courts following his defeat to Nadal last month and the last two (against Stan Wawrinka and Dimitrov), where he lost just one set, must boost his confidence before the upcoming showdown.
Medvedev looked in better condition against Dimitrov in their semi-final clash on Friday than he was in a few rounds and the ambitious Russian will benefit from a straight-sets win and a full day rest before the greatest challenge of his young career thus far.
En route to the final Medvedev has proven himself to be the real deal, the stand-out name from the next generation suitors such as Zverev, Tsitsipas or even Thiem (though he's already 26). Moreover, the Russian has made amends for his on-court misbehavior in the first few rounds to earn himself some support in this US Open crowd.
Rafael Nadal Betting Preview
The world number two will have a massive opportunity to add to his tally, reaching his fifth US Open final. The Spaniard has lost just the once, in 2011 to Novak Djokovic, winning his three titles in 2010 (3-1 vs Djokovic), 2013 (3-1 vs Djokovic again) and 2017 (3-0 vs Kevin Anderson).
Coming after 11 consecutive wins following his Wimbledon semi-final defeat to Federer, Rafa Nadal is the big favorite to lift the trophy at Arthur Ashe Stadium. He already beat the likes of John Millman, Hyeon Chung, Marin Cilic, Diego Schwartzman and Matteo Berrettini, dropping just one set (vs the 2014 Winner Cilic) in the process.
Rafa might've struggled to put away an inspired Matteo Berrettini in the first set of their semifinal tie, but eventually made a comeback in the resulting tiebreak and then triumphed in straight-sets as the Italian went down mentally and probably physically.
However, Nadal has lost to a few players (six) this year to give Medvedev a real hope of winning his maiden Grand Slam title, including three defeats on his beloved clay courts. Indeed, except losing to the usual suspects Djokovic and Federer, the Spaniard recorded some surprising defeats to Fabio Fognini, Dominic Thiem and Stefanos Tsitsipas (all of them on clay) in the leadup tournaments prior to the French Open.
While many tennis fans might be disappointed not to see Rafael Nadal take on either Roger Federer or Novak Djokovic in the 2019 US Open Final, the experienced Spaniard will face the tour’s most in-form player in Daniil Medvedev and he fought hard to get this chance.
Nadal will probably never see as good opportunity to scoop another US Open title as this, against a 23-years-old in his first ever Major final, but Medvedev’s style of play can be as unpredictable as it is unnerving. The Russian has the ability to outwit Rafa Nadal, especially if the three-time Champion doesn't dominate from the outset.
Under certain circumstances, Medvedev’s confidence could grow into dominance if he manage to upset Nadal's rhythm, not without the help of his incessant defense, the Russian talent can definitely claim a set, at least.
