Tulsa Rely Heavily On Rushing Attack

The Tulsa Golden Hurricanes are 2-8 on the year and are at the bottom of the American Athletic Conference with a 1-5 conference record.

Tulsa has lost 3 straight games and are coming into this game off a 41-14 loss to the Memphis Tigers.  Memphis pretty much shut down the Golden Hurricanes rushing attack and limited them to 145 yards in the game.

The Tulsa Golden Hurricanes don’t have a bad offense. They are 31 points per game over their 10 games and are ranked 15th in the nation in rushing. The issue with Tulsa is the fact that their defense is ranked 128th out of 130 D-I teams in college football!  They truly can’t stop anyone.

South Florida Hoping Charlie Strong Stays With Bulls

The South Florida Bulls come into this game with a 8-1 record.  Their only loss this year came 2 games back against Houston by the score 28-24.  That game was the only game all year that the Bulls did not post at least 31 points and just so happened to be their only loss this year.  The Bulls are now ranked 20th in the Coaches Poll and 23rd in the AP Poll.

The Bulls are a run heavy team that has the 9th overall offense in the NCAA. They are led on the field by QB Quinton Flowers.  Flowers is a dual threat QB that can beat teams single handedly with his arm or by his legs. Flowers was recently selected to participate in the 93rd East-West Shrine Game that will take place January 20, 2018.  Flowers is posting Heisman Trophy style number with back to back 1000 yard rushing seasons and passing for nearly 2000 yards with 15 touchdowns.

South Florida also has a very good defense.  They are ranked 19th in the FBS on defense overall.  They are holding opponents to 118.2 rushing yards per game and just over 201 passing yards per game.  Their defense has allowed them to play 3 out of the last 4 games under the posted total.  The total in the Bulls games are usually inflated due to the Bulls high power offense but the defense keeps opposition from loading up on points, which allows them to keep the game under the posted total.  The Bulls have had their total line listed at 60 or more four times this year and they have played under the posted total in 3 out of the 4 games.

Bulls Head Coach Charlie Strong has been rumored to be a possible candidate to replace Jim McElwain as the Florida Gators Head Coaching position.  Strong is very well connected in the State of Florida and helped Urban Meyer build Florida into a championship caliber team.   It remains to be seen if Strong would make the move or if he is content coaching in South Florida with the Bulls.

South Florida Dominates At Home

Who will win this game really isn’t even a question.  I can’t see any remote possibility that Tulsa can keep up with South Florida and Charlie Strong. The question comes into play on can the Bulls cover the 3 + touchdown spread?  The Bulls have been favored by more than 20 points 5 times this year and only covered the spread 2 times. Tulsa on the other hand hasn’t been an underdog of 20 or more points at all this year.

Both of these teams are run first teams that eat the clock so on paper, you would think Tulsa will keep it close by shortening the game with the run.  I don’t think there is any doubt that South Florida wins this game but I’m not so sure they will cover the spread.  The spread right now is set at South Florida -22.  Tulsa’s offense is good enough to keep them in the game but their defense is not. Facing lower level teams is a big difference than facing a team the caliber of South Florida.  South Florida WINS in blowout fashion!
