Dana White’s Contender Series 2018: Week 5 Handicapping Tips and Betting Picks
Dana White Contender Series
Where/Venue: TUF Gym
Where/Location: Las Vegas, Nevada
When: Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at 8:00 PM ET
The fifth week of Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series takes place this week on Tuesday, July 17, 2018 and can be seen only on UFC Fight Pass. Each week from now until the end of July, the UFC and Dana White will feature five fights on the regional level with fighters that are competing for a UFC contract. This particular event will feature five fighters that are undefeated and looking for that prestigious contract with Dana White and the UFC. The card will get started at 8:00 PM ET and only on UFC Fight Pass.
Unlike our normal MMA Handicapping articles, with the Dana White Contender Series, we handicap each fight and give you a play on each, that we feel is beneficial to play. With other UFC, Bellator and many regional cards, we handicap one feature fight and then give out one or two additional plays but this one, since there are just five fights on the card, we will handicap each fight and lay out our anticipated outcome.
Macy Barber 4-0 vs. Jamie Colleen 4-1
The main event for Dana White's Tuesday Night Contender Series this week will feature two tough ladies in the Strawweight Division. Undefeated Macy Barber 4-0 will be taking on Jamie Colleen 4-1 in the feature fight of the night on DWTNCS. Barber fights out of Fort Collins Martial Arts Academy in Fort Collins, Colorado. She has finished 3 of her 4 opponents inside the distance, with 1KO, 2 Submissions and won one fight by unanimous decision. Barber's opponents in those fights had a combined record of 5-2 at the time they fought Barber. Not really much experience and probably not enough for the UFC contract, but anything is possible if she puts on a dominating performance.
Jamie Colleen comes into this fight 4-1. She hasn't been inside the cage since last August when she appeared on season 1 of Dana White's Tuesday Night Contender Series. Colleen picked up the win in that fight, after being down and in my opinion, losing the first two rounds. Colleen showed a ton of heart, never giving up and finally getting the submission late in the 3rd round. Colleen's only loss came at the hands of current UFC fighter Danielle Taylor, who Colleen had beaten once already. Colleen is a tough and gritty fighter, that trains out of Renzo Gracie Philly, with the likes of Paul Felder, Jonavan Webb, Sean Brady and Darrell Horcher. I've known Jamie for many years, as she made her pro debut on the regional card that I was working for at the time.
If I'm being completely honest with you, this fight probably isn't “Main Event” worthy but it brings a HUGE upside for us in odds. Jamie Colleen is a +350 underdog in this fight and I think the online sportsbooks got this one really wrong! I'm not a fan of Jamie being out of the cage for so long but she has fought a much higher level of competition than that of Barber. Remember, we said earlier that Barber's combined opponents' record was 5-2…..well Jamie Colleen's total of her opponents is 19-6, more than doubled what Barber brings to the table. Additionally, Colleen has a very underrated submission game that she has learned through Daniel Gracie! I think it is safe to risk a nice longshot here and play Colleen for 2 units!
Pick: Jamie Colleen +350 for 2 units
Domingo Pilarte 7-1 vs. Vince Morales 7-1
Our second fight will be a Bantamweight battle between two 7-1 fighters, Domingo Pilarte and Vince Morales. Pilarte is 7-1 and fights out of Revolution Dojo. Pilarte has won 4 straight but only one of those opponents had a winning record. Pilarte has faced off with a very average level of competition with their combined record being 25-20. Pilarte has spent the majority of his career fighting for Legacy FC, which is one of the better regional promotions in the circuit.
Vince Morales is also 7-1 and he is riding a 5 fight win streak. Morales is coming in off a 2nd round knockout over prospect Brandon Hempleman 10-3. Morales has never gone to a decision in his career, winning all 7 of his wins by finish, 5 by KO and 2 by Submission. Morales has just one loss on his record, which came back in 2015, when he got caugth in a choke at the hands of Josh Wick.
I like Morales in this fight. I think he is the more aggressive fighter and brings more things to the table. I think we will see Morales push the pace of this fight early and put Pilarte in spots that he is not comfortable. I would have liked to of seen the odds a bit more appealing to me but at -250, we will still play it at 1.5 units.
Pick: Vince Morales -250 for 1.5 units
Austin Vanderford 4-0 vs. Angelo Trevino 7-2
The third fight of the evening will feature Austin Vanderford and Angelo Trevino in a Welterweight Fight. Vanderford comes into this fight with just 4 pro fights under his belt but he also had 4 amateur fights before turning pro. Vanderford has won 1 fight by KO, 1 by Submission and 2 by Unanimous Decision.
Angelo Trevino is 7-2 and the more experienced of the two fighters. Trevino trains out of Team Alpha Male, with the likes of Urijah Faber and Cody Garbrandt. He has won his last 4 fights overall and now gets to show off his talents in front of the boss, Dana White.
This is one of the closest fights as far as odds are concerned. Vanderford is -170 while Trevino is coming in at around +140. I am going to lean ever so slightly here to Trevino, basically because of who he trains with and his experience. The big lights is tough for most fighters but one that has only fought on the pro level 4 times is much more difficult. I think that will get to him late in the first round, and he will go through a major adrenaline dump. Trevino wins by second round TKO.
Pick: Angelo Trevino +140 for 2 units
Edmen Shahbazyan 6-0 vs. Antonio Jones 7-1
The second fight of the night will feature two middleweights competing for the UFC contract. Edmen Shahbazyan will take on Antonio Jones, in what should be one of the best fights of the night. Shahbazyan is undefeated at 6-0 and fights out of the Glendale Fighting Club. Shahbazyan is a heavy-handed striker, that has never gone beyond the first round. Looking deeper into that stat, he has knocked out every one of his opponents in the first round!
Antonio Jones is 7-1 overall and riding a 3 fight win streak. Jones is coming off back to back over Roger Narvaez 8-2 and Ike Villanueva 12-8. The one thing that stands out for Jones is he hasn't been in the cage since June 2017, which is over a year ago. I really couldn't find if that was because of an injury or what the reason but, either way, I am not a fan.
I like Shahbazyan in this fight. He is a total striker that has one-punch knockout power. I think he lays it all on the line in front of Dana White and is one of my favorites for earning the UFC Contract.
Pick: Edmen Shahbazyan -215 for 2 units
Anthony Adams 7-0 vs. Chibwikem Onyenegecha 6-0
In the first fight of the night, Anthony Adams 7-0 will face Chibwikem Onyenegecha 6-0. When you look this fight up on most online sportsbooks, you are going to see Chibwikem Onyenegecha vs. Maki Pitolo, but that fight was canceled due to Pitolo pulling out of the fight. That being said, we probably won't find odds on this particular fight until late on Tuesday.
These two undefeated middleweights will square off to open the night for Dana White's Tuesday Night Contender Series. Adams is a 7-0 undefeated fighter that trains out of Team Wildman Vale Tudo. I will be completely honest here in saying I have no idea anything about this gym or any of their trainers. One thing that stands out to me is Adams has never had a finish in his career. He is 7-0 and all 7 of his wins come by way of unanimous decision.
Chibwikem Onyenegecha is also undefeated at 6-0 but unlike Adams, Onyenegecha has won every one of his fights by KO, 3 in the first round and 3 in the second round. He is a very heavy-hitter that has amazing one punch power. He will need to adjust his style a bit in this fight with the late minute replacement but I don't think it matters much. He is going to KO Adams in the first round!
