Quick Picks: Aljamain Sterling -130 for 5 Units, Tyron Woodley -200 for 3.5 Units
Renan Barao vs. Aljamain Sterling
Renan Barao is the former UFC Bantamweight Champion and at one point, was considered the best bantamweight of all time. Barao is 34-3 and his only losses come against TJ Dillashaw 2 times, Jeremy Stephens and his pro debut against someone by the name Joao Paulo Rodrigues, whom I have no information on. After spending many years at bantamweight, Barao moved up in weight to the featherweight division so he no longer had to cut weight. The idea was decent but the results were less than what he expected as he 1-1 at 145 lbs.
Aljamain Sterling is 13-2 and is coming off a decision victory over Augusto Mendes at UFC on FOX 24 back on April 15, 2017. “Aljo” lost his 2 prior fights but both fights were split decisions and against two of the top bantamweights in the division in Raphael Assuncao and Bryan Caraway. “Aljo” trains with the elite fighters at Serra Longo and will be more than ready for this fight.
This fight was originally scheduled to take place at the bantamweight 135 lb limit but the California State Athletic Commission felt that due to Barao’s difficulties with the weight cut in his last fight, he would have issues making weight and the commission changed the fight to a 140 lb catchweight bout. Now, some may say that is a benefit to Barao because now he doesn’t need to deplete his body during the weight cut but what they don’t seem to take into consideration is Sterling is a HUGE bantamweight and having to cut less weight will be great for him. Barao has had his time, it has come and gone and he is going to lose a striking battle against Aljamain Sterling. I’m going to go with “Aljo” as a 5 Unit Play on Saturday Night!
Pick: Aljamain Sterling -130 for 5 Units
Tyron Woodley vs. Demian Maia
Tyron Woodley will be looking to defend his UFC Welterweight Title on Saturday against Demian Maia. Woodley defeated Robbie Lawler back at UFC 201 one year ago and since has went on to have two fights with Stephen Thompson, one he went to a draw and one he won by 5 round unanimous decision. Woodley is 17-3-1 and is 7-2-1 in the UFC.
Demian Maia is on a 7 fight win streak and has been waiting to get his shot at UFC gold for many years. Maia has defeated the likes of Jorge Masvidal, Carlos Condit, Matt Brown and Gunnar Nelson along the way to earning his shot at Woodley. Maia is one of the greatest Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioners in all of MMA and there is no doubt, he will be looking to get this fight to the ground where he is most comfortable.
This fight is an easy fight to predict because the style overwhelms any other information that you may have. When you handicap a fight, you must first ask yourself, “How can they win”. Well for Demian Maia, the only path to victory is by taking the fight to the ground and submitting Woodley. The problem with that scenario is Woodley defends 91.89% of the takedown attempts on him. He was a D1 wrestler and 2 time all american in college for wrestling. Woodley has many ways he can win this fight and the style advantage in the fight. I think Woodley wins this fight in a striking battle over Maia.
Pick: Tyron Woodley -200 for 3.5 Units
