Volkan Oezdemir and Jiří Procházka will be headlining the prelim card at UFC 251 on Fight Island on Saturday Night. These two light heavyweights are expected to give the fans a show before we see a main card that features 3 championship fights in one night.
Volkan Oezdemir is a fighter that has been rather streaky throughout his career, but a lot of that comes from his opponent’s talent level. Oezdemir started his UFC journey with a 3 fight win streak that quickly landed him a championship bout with Daniel Cormier where he was close to a +300 underdog. Oezdemir followed this defeat with 2 more losses to Anthony Smith and Dominick Reyes, both fights that were seen as relatively even going into the fight according to the books.
Oezdemir is now back on the way up after winning his last two fights, including one as an underdog to a talented undefeated fighter. I think that these stretches tell us a lot about Oezdemir and his overall talent level, but I think that he is very much dependent on his opponent.
The toughest part about this fight is that Oezdemir’s opponent isn’t clearly defined. Jiří Procházka is a fighter from the Czech Republic who is making his UFC debut after fighting in RIZIN since 2015.
Procházka is a first round finisher and he has won 10 straight fights, 8 of which came in the first round. The issue is that he is facing fighters that would be massive favorites against someone like Oezdemir.
There is no doubt that we have to respect Jiří for constantly going out there and handling business against 205 pound men each and every time out, but it is very difficult to gauge just how impressive he is. I think one thing that we do have to understand is that Jiří is capable of putting most guys to sleep, even if it is on a smaller promotion.
I think that the odds here are pretty standard and there is not one side that I love more than the other. However, I do find a ton of value over on MyBookie when looking at particular fight outcomes. Ozedemir is +125 by TKO/KO and +375 by decision, while Jiří Procházka is +320 for either outcome. To me, it is WAY more likely that Procházka wins this by TKO than by decision and I think that these odds are really, really crazy. I like Jiří Procházka by TKO/KO at +320 here for the value.
