UFC Fight Night 139 Handicapping
The feature fight for us here at Spooky Express at UFC Fight Night 139 is between Eric Shelton and Joseph Morales. This fight is scheduled for three 5-minute rounds in the Flyweight Division. Earlier this week, we were made aware that the UFC would be disbanding the UFC’s Flyweight Division but it is unknown at this time when they will make the final call on when to end the division.
Several Flyweights have posted on social media that they have been notified that the UFC will be doing away with the division and some have even gone as far as stating they’ve been released from the promotion. That being said, whenever it happens, we at least have this Flyweight battle here, which should be a decent fight.
Joseph Morales enters this fight 9-1 overall and 1-1 in the UFC. Morales made his UFC debut at UFC Fight Night 141 and defeated Roberto Sanchez by the first-round submission via rear naked choke. Morales followed that up by getting KO’d at UFC Fight Night 125 in the second round by Deiveson Figueredo.
Eric Shelton comes into this fight with an 11-5 record and is 1-3 in the UFC, not including his 2-1 record on Ultimate Fighter Season 24. Shelton has had some strains of bad luck while in the UFC. He has had opponents miss weight, he has found himself on the opposite side of some bad decisions and most of all, he has never been finished, with each of his 5 losses coming by decision.
In this fight, both of these guys pretty much know that they are going to be cut at the conclusion of the fight. With the UFC parting ways with the Flyweight Division, they will either have to move up to the Bantamweight Division or be cut and I don’t think either of these guys is really big enough to move up in weight.
That means both will come out with nothing to lose, which will benefit the striker, who is Shelton. Shelton is a very crisp striker that has trained with Bang Ludwig. His striking will be the difference maker in this fight and I think he will get the late 2nd round finish over Morales.
