UFC Fight Night APEX Vegas #6 Betting Preview and Free Play: Chris Weidman vs. Omari Akhmedov

by Tyler Vaysman | August 2, 2020 |

The upcoming fight night for UFC features some great matches for fans and bettors alike. One to take notice of is the co-main event featuring middleweights Omari Akhmedov and Chris Weidman.

  • Date: Saturday, August 8
  • Venue: UFC APEX
  • Watch on: ESPN+

The Fighters

Omari Akhmedov (20-4-1)

Akhmedov is currently ranked 11th in the middleweight division. His fighting resume shows that he has 7 wins by knockout, 5 by submission, and 8 by decision.

“Wolverine” has a striking accuracy at 34 percent and a grappling accuracy at 50 percent. He lands 2.99 significant strikes a minute while absorbing 2.77. This ratio is solid, but down the road needs to defend better to make this great.

Akhmedov has a takedown defense at 63 percent and a significant strike defense at 58 percent. He also averages 2.40 takedowns and 0.22 submissions every 15 minutes.

Chris Weidman (14-5-0)

Weidman has made great progress so far in the middleweight division. His fighting resume shows that he has 6 wins by knockout, 4 by decision, and 4 by submission.

“The All-American” has a striking accuracy at 43 percent and a grappling accuracy at 52 percent. He lands 3.15 significant strikes a minute and absorbs 3.23. This ratio is starting to slip on the negative side, so defending here would be better for him.

Weidman has a takedown defense at 73 percent and a significant strike defense at 51 percent. He also averages 3.76 takedowns and 1.02 submissions every 15 minutes.

Odds For This Event

The market has this fight at a coin flip, with virtually no give in either direction for who could be the favorite. BookMaker has the odds currently sitting at:

Akhmedov: -115

Weidman: -115

*odds are subject to changes

Potential Winning Pick

Both of these fighters have the potential to turn this fight into the fight of the night on the main event card. On paper, you could not ask for a better matchup than this.

Akhmedov shows signs of a well balanced fighter, with conservative significant strikes and winning in every category needed to get the job done. However, his takedown and significant strike defenses might cause problems in this fight.

Weidman slightly edges out Akhmedov for this one. I believe he can work Akhmedov on the ground more often with his aggressive takedowns and wear on him.
